Job summary
We are seeking a passionate and skilled Consultant Urologist to
join our innovative team at South Tyneside and Sunderland Hospital. This role
focuses on prostate and bladder cancer services, with a strong emphasis on
robotic surgery.
You will join a high-performing team that has completed over 2,000
robotic procedures, aiming for 200 pelvic procedures annually. The post
includes theatre lists, outpatient clinics, flexible cystoscopy, and
participation in the weekly Urology Cancer MDT. In-house mentoring will support
development in robotic prostatectomy and cystectomy, with opportunities to
engage in robotic reconstructive work.
Our department operates across a wide geographical area in the
North East, serving a population of 900,000. We are a designated Cancer Centre
for Urology, offering advanced procedures including robotic surgery,
cryotherapy, and reconstructive techniques.

Main duties of the job
This post focuses on
prostate and bladder cancer services. The successful candidate will join a
skilled team of robotic surgeons and nurses. Key responsibilities include:
Performing
robotic prostatectomy and cystectomy, with mentoring until independent
operating is achieved.
Delivering
theatre lists, outpatient clinics, and flexible cystoscopy.
Participating
in the weekly Urology Cancer MDT and wider oncology service.
Engaging
in robotic reconstructive procedures, with opportunities for further
development.
The post holder will
work alongside 15 Consultant Urologists across the directorate, supporting
outpatient, diagnostic, day case, and inpatient services. Clinics are held at
Sunderland, Durham, and South Tyneside. The on-call rota is 1:12.
The role includes
teaching and training at all levels, contributing to audit and research
programmes, and promoting team-based practice and innovation. The post holder
is expected to support national audits, recruit to clinical trials, and publish
surgical outcomes. They will also play a key role in shaping service
development and enhancing patient pathways through collaborative working and
evidence-based practice.

the Directorate of Urology.
The post holder is expected to possess
CCT or equivalent and to be on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of
taking up the post.
The post holder is expected to attend
Directorate meetings and take part in Audit and Clinical Governance. Audit
takes place monthly on a rolling half day. The post-holder will undergo annual
appraisal, as do all medical staff in the Directorate. The post holder will
also be expected to develop the Service in keeping with National guidance.
The Urology Department is accredited for
Higher Surgical Training and is regarded as one of the premier training units
within the region. Feedback from the Foundation School survey and GPVT scheme
is very good.
The Department has an excellent record
of trainees passing post-graduate examinations. There is a representative from
the department on the Regional Specialty Training committee. The post-holder
will be expected to partake in training of all medical and other staff as well
as undergraduates to ensure trainees have a good training experience.
A well-stocked library with professional
librarians is situated in the postgraduate medical education centre at the SRH
site. A good number of Urology texts and journals are available.
Newcastle Medical School and its
Postgraduate facilities are 15 miles away. Sunderland University has been
awarded a Medical School with the first intake of student who commenced in
September 2019. The department provides educational opportunities for students
from both medical schools.
The appointee will be expected to
undergo continuing medical education and appraisal in accordance with the
guidelines agreed by the Royal College of Surgeons and GMC and the post-holder
will be entitled and encouraged to take regulatory study leave.
There are also educational links with
Sunderland, Durham and Northumbria Universities.
