Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant General Surgeon with a dedicated speciality interest in Upper GI and Bariatric surgery.

The Trusts Bariatric Unit is one of the largest NHS bariatric surgery units nationally. It is globally recognised for its academic output and has over 200 peer reviewed publications to its credit.

Two of our colleagues are currently on the council of BOMSS and two are its current trustees. We are also represented on the IFSO scientific committee and have strong links with University of Sunderland with colleagues having visiting professorship roles. One of our current colleagues chairs the National Bariatric Surgery Registry. The unit regularly hosts OAGB training courses for surgeons from around the UK and abroad. The unit also has a RCS/ BOMSS approved fellow in addition to three deanery trainees and another trust grade bariatric fellow.

We have a track record of producing high quality research in collaboration with the University of Sunderland. The successful candidate will be working in an exciting unit full of academic and leadership potential.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will join the existing team of 19 General Surgeons providing emergency General Surgery and possess specialist skills in either benign upper GI surgery, bariatric surgery or both. Emergency work would be on a 1:8 basis, comprising a combination of 24 hour on call at South Tyneside District Hospital and a separate day and night 12 hour service provision at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Overall responsibilities of the role include the co-ordination and delivery of strategic and operational aspects of General Surgery Services across South Tyneside and Sunderland and the wider sub-regional catchment area. These will reflect National and Local priorities including the strategic direction of the Trust and the Directorate of General Surgery.

The post holder is expected to possess Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons and should have full GMC registration, be on the specialist register (or be within six months of obtaining CCT) and be successful in the Intercollegiate Speciality exam (or equivalent).
