Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, with an elective interest in Foot and Ankle, at South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust on a permanent basis. This is an additional post, joining our current team of 3 Foot & Ankle surgeons.

The successful candidate will also have an interest in Trauma Surgery, and will join a team of 25 consultant orthopaedic surgeons working across both Trust sites.

The successful applicant will be expected to build an elective practice in Foot & Ankle, and will be expected to be a part of the general orthopaedic on-call Trauma rota.

Applicants should hold a CCT in Orthopaedics (or equivalent) or be within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be joining the established Foot and Ankle team at STSFT, which currently comprises of three consultants, with support from the wider nursing and therapy teams.

The successful candidate will have an interest in Foot and Ankle Orthopaedics, and it is expected that this likely to make up all of the elective practice. Established or development of relevant special interest within Foot and Ankle orthopaedics would be encouraged.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will join the existing team of 25 Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultants. Overall responsibilities include assisting the department in coordinating and delivering the strategic and operational aspects of Trauma and Orthopaedic services to the surrounding population.

The post holder is expected to possess FRCS (Tr & Orth) or equivalent and to be on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of taking up the post. Fellowship training covering foot and ankle trauma and elective foot and ankle surgery is an essential requirement for this post, and additional training in the management of general trauma would be desirable.

The post holder is expected to attend the bi-monthly Directorate meetings and take part in monthly Audit and Clinical Governance meetings and related activities. The post-holder will undergo annual appraisal and 5 yearly revalidation in line with GMC requirements. The post holder will also be expected to develop the service in keeping with national guidance and local needs.

The appointee will be expected to provide advice for subspecialist trauma as required and surgical provision for more complex foot and ankle trauma. The appointee will be expected to work closely with colleagues for further foot & ankle elective service expansion. The appointee will be expected to provide a supportive role in the diabetic foot service by attending regular vascular / podiatry MDT meetings and helping to develop the service from an orthopaedic perspective.

The appointee will be expected to undergo continuing medical education in accordance with the guidelines agreed by the Royal College of Surgeons and the post-holder will be entitled and encouraged to take appropriate study leave.

The T&O Department regularly receives medical students from the Universities of Newcastle upon Tyne and Sunderland and the post-holder will be expected to assist with their teaching.
