are invited for the post of Trust Doctor in Vascular Surgery (SPR-level). The successful applicant will work a 1 in
6 vascular on-call with no commitment to General Surgery. The post would suit
experienced trainees (senior SHO/core trainees) who wish to obtain further
grounding/experience in open and endovascular surgery, prior to appointment on
a higher surgical training programme. This post represents an opportunity for a
SPR equivalent surgical trainee to gain experience in a large acute hospital
gaining wide experience in emergency and elective practice. The post holder will also have the
opportunity to attend departmental surgery teaching sessions, in addition to
participation at Morbidity and Mortality meetings and presentation of audit to
peers. We are one of three tertiary
centres for vascular services in the North East, providing services to a
population of approximately 900,000. The service consists of 8 Consultant
Surgeons and 5 Specialist Vascular Nurses supported by a wide team of junior
doctors (4xF1, 2xSHO, 6xSpR), nursing and administrative staff, with input from
many other services such as Occupational Therapy, Podiatry and
Physiotherapy. The team also works
closely with the Radiology Department to offer non-invasive treatments for
Vascular patients, working with specialist interventional Radiologists.
Main duties of the job
The
service provides a comprehensive Endovascular Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair
(EVAR) programme. All major operations
take place at Sunderland as the arterial hub site, with outpatient clinics at
Sunderland, South Tyneside, Bishop Auckland and North Durham Hospitals. A dedicated vascular ward runs out of
Sunderland Royal Hospital which has capacity for 24 patients (C36). The ward has a Ward Manager and 2 Junior
Sisters responsible to increase leadership on the ward. Day-case procedures are
also undertaken from Durham Treatment Centre to provide services close to home
for patients in the Durham locality. The Directorate is dynamic and forward thinking. Education, innovation, change, clinical

process within the Directorate.
The

STSFT is seeking a motivated individual to
join the team from as a Trust Doctor working at Registrar level at this major arterial
Centre. The post holder will have experience equivalent to that of ST3-6
trainee who wishes to train further in a broad range of vascular and
endovascular surgery.
The Unit specialises in
surgeon-led/delivered endovascular (percutaneous & hybrid) care, aortic
surgery, carotid endarterectomy, lower limb reconstruction and complex venous
work. Active participation is expected in the departmental meetings,
rota management and departmental junior doctor teaching programmes.
Clinical audit projects are actively encouraged in the department, whilst
participation in clinical governance and morbidity & mortality meetings is
mandatory.
The successful applicant will participate
in an on-call rota (1:6) which supports the vascular service exclusively. There
will be no on-call commitment to General Surgery. This post represents an
excellent opportunity for a junior surgical trainee to gain experience in a
large acute hospital with contemporary tertiary vascular emergency and elective
practice. This post will be based predominantly at Sunderland Royal
Hospital vascular hub, although provision of some clinic and day-case activity
may be required at South Tyneside Hospital, Bishop Auckland Hospital,
University Hospital of North Durham and Durham Treatment Centre.
This post is not recognised for training
purposes by the Postgraduate Deanery.
This is initially a fixed term appointment for 12 months. The successful applicant
