Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic surgeon to join our innovative, friendly team in the role of RCS Senior Clinical Fellow in Bariatric Surgery. The successful applicant will participate in the General Surgery on call rota, whilst working as part of the bariatric team caring for bariatric, benign UGI and emergency general surgical patients.
This post represents an opportunity for an ST7+ equivalent surgical trainee to gain experience in a large bariatric centre, gaining competence in performing bariatric procedures independently, managing patients through elective outpatient settings, pre and post operatively and dealing with Bariatric emergencies.
STSFT is the lead-Trust in the Wear base unit for the clinical curriculum as part of Newcastle Universitys Regional Medical School Concept. To support undergraduate teaching the Trust has a £4 million Education and Training Centre. The Directorate has strong academic links with the University of Newcastle and the University of Sunderland with honorary lecturer and visiting professorships held by consultant staff. There is also a teaching fellow within the Directorate to support the teaching programme.
Previous post holders have gained significant exposure to upper GI and Bariatric surgery, contributed to publications and presented work at national and international meetings, greatly enhancing their career progression.
This is a 12 months fixed term post (1st November 2025-31st October 2026).
Main duties of the job
The internationally renowned Bariatric Unit also offers a full range of benign UGI surgery. The service is provided by laparoscopic and robotic UGI consultant surgeons with a bariatric interest, supported by registrars and foundation doctors, specialist nurses and specialist dietitians. The service performs Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Gastric Banding, Gastric Balloons, and Revisional Bariatric Surgery. In addition we also perform gallstone surgery, common bile duct exploration, anti-reflux surgery and laparoscopic hernias.
Applicants must hold GMC registration and FRCS, or equivalent qualifications. The appointee will have a wealth of General Surgery experience and must be able to demonstrate log book evidence of professional development. Experience of laparoscopic surgery, audit and evidence of flexible independent surgical practice are essential. Experience of leading training courses and presenting papers at regional/national meetings are desirable.
