Job summary

Two opportunities have arisen to join a dedicated and passionate team who are committed to ensuring the ENT department is a reference point of excellence in South Tyneside and Sunderland and across the NHS.

We are looking for two Substantive Consultants in Otolaryngology one with a specialist interest in Rhinology and the other paediatrics. Applicants should show a commitment to their area of subspeciality.They should either hold FRCS (ORL HNS) or equivalent, have full GMC registration, be on the specialist register (or be within 6 months of CCT) . This is a substantive FTE post with an indicative 10PA job plan, although consideration will be given to applicants wishing to work less than full time. On call will be at 1:8

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Otolaryngology with a specialist interest in Rhinology and the post of Consultant in Otolaryngology with a specialist interest in Paediatrics to join a team of 8 WTE Consultants and 4 Less than full time consultants.

The post will be based at the Sunderland Royal site with possible requirement for peripheral clinics at Durham, Washington or South Tyneside. The Directorate comprises the specialities of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Audiology and Orthodontics.

There is excellent engagement and working between all the departments both within and out with the Directorate.The ENT department has consistently improved performance and recovery since the pandemic and is open to new and more streamlined ways of working.

Examples of engagement with new ways of working is the use of talk to text piloted by ENT for clinics and letters, eliminating backlog of GP letters. Nurse Practitioners are trained and competent in the management of a range of common ENT conditions and this helps direct more complex patients to consultants, which is better for the patients.

Teaching and training are very important to us, we have excellent feedback in this area, we offer dedicated teaching time 3 times a month in our Golden Hour.

The post holder will join the existing team of consultants and will participate in the on-call rota.

Overall responsibilities include the co-ordination and delivery of the strategic and operational aspects of the ENT Services across Sunderland and South Tyneside and the wider sub-regional catchment area. These will reflect National and Local priorities including the strategic direction of STSFT and the Directorate of Head & Neck.

The post holder is expected to possess CCT or equivalent and to be on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of taking up the post.

The post holder is expected to attend Directorate meetings and take part in Audit and Clinical Governance. Audit takes place monthly on a rolling half day. The post-holder will undergo annual appraisal, as do all medical staff in the Directorate. The post holder will also be expected to develop the Service in keeping with National guidance.

The ENT Department is accredited for Higher Surgical Training and is regarded as one of the premier training units within the region. Feedback from the Foundation School survey and GPVT scheme is very good.

The Department has an excellent record of trainees passing post-graduate examinations. There is a representative from the department on the Regional Specialty Training committee. The post-holder will be expected to partake in training of all medical and other staff as well as undergraduates to ensure trainees have a good training experience.

A well-stocked library with professional librarians is situated in the postgraduate medical education centre at the SRH site. A good number of ENT texts and journals are available.

Newcastle Medical School and its Postgraduate facilities are 15 miles away. Sunderland University has been awarded a Medical School with the first intake of student who commenced in September 2019. The department provides educational opportunities for students from both medical schools.

The appointee will be expected to undergo continuing medical education and appraisal in accordance with the guidelines agreed by the Royal College of Surgeons and GMC and the post-holder will be entitled and encouraged to take regulatory study leave.

There are also educational links with Sunderland, Durham and Northumbria Universities.
