South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust (STSFT) are seeking to appoint a Registrar in General Surgery. The post will be based at South Tyneside District Hospital. Opportunities will be available to participate in the delivery of undergraduate & postgraduate teaching and simulation training at one or both sites.

STSFT is the lead-Trust in the Wear Base Unit for the clinical curriculum as part of Newcastle Universitys Regional Medical School Concept. To support the undergraduate teaching the Trust has a £4 million Education and Training Centre

Although the post is not recognised for training, trainees will be allocated to a clinical supervisor, and have the opportunity for supervised learning and feedback. They will also have access to department training meetings and local teaching.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will have excellent interpersonal skills, and must be able to demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with patients, family members and staff at all levels.

It is essential that they are able to work effectively as part of a team, is committed to continuing medical education and continuous personal development. They should also have the ability to develop and lead research and audit projects.

Applicants must hold GMC registration and MRCS or equivalent and will usually have finished their core training and have some experience of working on the registrar rota. The appointee is expected to have completed 2 years experience in General Surgery, and must be able to demonstrate log book evidence of current professional development. Laparoscopic experience is essential, whilst evidence of flexible independent surgical experience is desirable.

Involvement in the general surgical on-call at registrar level will be required from the successful applicant.
