Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to work in the Head & Neck
Directorate. The successful applicant will work between the sites of Sunderland
Royal Hospital, South Tyneside Hospital, Durham Treatment Centre, Shotley
Bridge Hospital and Primary Care facilities.
You will work as part of a team with the existing 8 Consultants and
other staff within the department. The successful applicant will be required to
work flexibly within this team structure and participate in a 1:6 2nd
on call rota.
You must have full registration with the General Dental Council and be
in possession of Bachelor of Dental Surgery, or equivalent and preferably a
postgraduate qualification e.g. FDS, MFDS, MJDF. In addition, you will be
expected to have experience at SHO or DCT level in Oral & Maxillofacial
Surgery and be competent in Minor Oral Surgery.

Main duties of the job
In the
Oral and Maxillo-facial Unit in the Sunderland
Royal Hospital
a large number of day case surgery procedures are undertaken in the department.
A specific oral and maxillofacial operating theatre is available. Duties may also include operating and
clinical sessions in Shotley Bridge General Hospital, University Hospital of
North Durham and South Tyneside General Hospital and primary care outreach
facilities. It is hoped that the
successful applicant will develop a special interest.
The
Trust has close ties to Newcastle and Sunderland Universities.
The
appointee will work under the supervision of Consultant colleagues and duties
will include in-patients and out-patient work, day-case surgery, audit and teaching. The appointee will take part in supervision
and training of junior staff and may be called upon to contribute to training
of students and nursing staff. Inpatient
consultations will be provided as required.
This
post is up to a maximum of 12 sessions inclusive of 2nd on call on a
1:6 rota with Speciality Registrars and other Speciality Doctors.

has been taken in appointing, encouraging and supporting committed and
motivated junior staff. Good links and
exchanges of trainees from other countries have been developed.
At
present this service is provided from Sunderland Royal Hospital and outside
Sunderland, from South Tyneside General Hospital, Durham Treatment Centre, Shotley
Bridge General Hospital and primary care facilities. The successful applicant
may be required to carry out some sessions at premises owned and operated by
the Primary Care providers.
The Unit works in close co-operation with its other medical
and dental colleagues, in particular Radiotherapy, Dermatology, ENT, General
Surgery, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Accident & Emergency,
Orthodontics, Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics and our community medical
and dental colleagues.
There
are regular head and neck clinics, joint orthognathic clinics and joint
dermatology clinics.
