Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Endovascular Fellow in Vascular Surgery (experienced registrar-level). The successful applicant will work a 1:6 on-call with no commitment to General Surgery. The post may suit experienced/post-CCT trainees who wish to train further in routine/ complex open and endovascular surgery prior to appointment as a Consultant.

The service consists of 10 Consultant Surgeons supported by a full team of junior doctors, ACP, nursing and admin staff, with input from many other services including Interventional Radiology, Stroke Medicine & Diabetes.

STSFT was one of the first UK vascular centres to commission its own dedicated hybrid theatre, recently upgraded to the GE Allia. This facility is allocated exclusively for vascular use 24/7. In addition, all Endovascular Surgeons have their own job-planned sessions (6 sessions/week) in Radiology for further endovascular capacity (Siemens Artis Q).

The successful applicant will be actively involved in the planning/delivery of routine percutaneous endovascular procedures, hybrid cases including complex aorto-iliac re-canalisation using fusion imaging and EVAR (conventional & complex). There will also be dedicated surgeon-led sessions in the angiosuite and ambulatory endovenous intervention. Endovascular planning and training will be offered on TeraRecon software and GE Fusion packages.

Main duties of the job

Specific features to this fellowship include:

  • Dedicated, timetabled angiosuite (surgeon-led) and hybrid-theatre training lists
  • Standard high-volume endovascular caseload experience (i.e. catheter angiography, iliac/femoro-popliteal angioplasty/stenting, lithoripsy, thrombectomy, lysis, tibial intervention)
  • Renal arterio-venous endovascular intervention
  • Endovascular case planning (routine/complex peripheral and aortic) using contemporary software packages e.g. TeraRecon
  • IRMER training certification (if required)
  • Complete Independent Hybrid theatre operating (i.e. without Radiologist or Radiographer)
  • Image optimization and post-processing
  • Hybrid imaging hardware driving/intra-operative image manipulation
  • Training in Fusion-guided endovascular intervention
  • Vascular duplex scanning training sessions as required
  • Independent/Supervised endo-venous lists (RFA/foam sclerotherapy)

In addition to the above comprehensive endovascular programme, there will be continued exposure to conventional open vascular surgery, aortic surgery, carotid endarterectomy, lower limb arterial reconstruction, renal access and complex venous work.
