Consultant Colorectal/General Surgeon

Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant General Surgeon with a dedicated speciality interest in Colorectal Surgery.

The postholder will join the existing surgical team within the Directorate of General Surgery delivering care across South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and there will be a requirement to work across both sites.

The post is full-time comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will join the existing team of 20 General Surgeons providing emergency General Surgery and possess specialist skills in Colorectal Surgery. Emergency work would be on a 1:6.7 basis, comprising a combination of 24 hour on call at South Tyneside District Hospital and a separate day and night 12-hour service provision at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Overall responsibilities of the role include the co-ordination and delivery of strategic and operational aspects of General Surgery Services across South Tyneside and Sunderland and the wider sub-regional catchment area. These will reflect National and Local priorities including the strategic direction of the Trust and the Directorate of General Surgery.

Post holders are expected to possess Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons and be on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of taking up the post.

Other weekly commitments will include the colorectal MDT at SRH, an endoscopy list, and 2 outpatient clinics including 2WW referrals, new colorectal referrals and general surgical referrals. Overall responsibilities include the co-ordination and delivery of the strategic and operational aspects of the General Surgery Services across South Tyneside and Sunderland and the wider sub-regional catchment area. These will reflect National and Local priorities including the strategic direction for the Trust and the Directorate of General Surgery. The post holder is expected to possess Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons and be on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of taking up the post. The General Surgery Department is accredited for Higher Surgical Training and is regarded as one of the premier training units within the region. Feedback from the Foundation School survey for Foundation Trainees has improved significantly in recent years and is very good. The post-holder will be expected to partake in training of all medical and other staff as well as undergraduates to ensure trainees have a good training experience. A well-stocked library with professional librarians is situated in the postgraduate medical education centre at the Sunderland Royal Hospital site. Newcastle Medical School and its Postgraduate facilities are 15 miles away. The appointee will be expected to undergo continuing medical education and appraisal in accordance with the guidelines agreed by the Royal College of Surgeons and GMC and the post-holder will be entitled and encouraged to take regulatory study leave. There are also educational links with Sunderland, Durham and Northumbria Universities.
