Job summary

This Vacancy is only available to current employees of STSFT and doctors employed by Lead Employer Trust.

Applications are invited for the post of a Trust Doctor within the directorate of General Surgery, Surgical Division.

This is a permanent post and is primarily based at the South Tyneside Hospital site.

The successful applicant will work a 1 in 7 General Surgery on call. The post may suit experienced junior trainees (senior SHO/core trainees post-MRCS) who wish to obtain further grounding/experience in open and laparoscopic General Surgery, prior to appointment on a higher surgical training programme.

The successful applicants will be guided in their development by an Educational and Clinical Supervisor and will have access to a range of educational opportunities equivalent to Foundation Programme teaching at year 2 level.

The Surgical Division is dynamic and forward thinking. Education, innovation, change, clinical effectiveness and efficiency are integral to the planning and development process across the Directorates. The Division is committed to working towards delivery of patient-centric care, improving both delivery and access to services for all the local populations. The successful candidates will be expected to support senior colleagues in shaping and maintaining the service of this modern forward-thinking Division.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will provide highquality clinical care across inpatient wards, outpatient clinics and theatres. Duties include timely patient assessment, escalation when required, and assisting with supervised elective and emergency surgical procedures within GMC guidance.

Opportunities are available for research and for developing surgical skills with the General Surgery team, including Upper and Lower GI specialists.

The postholder will participate in departmental meetings, rota activities, junior doctor teaching, clinical audit, clinical governance and M&M meetings. Full GMC registration is essential; MRCS is desirable.

Other Duties (not exhaustive):

  • Support Consultantled clinics.
  • Prepare patients for theatre and provide postoperative care.
  • Manage routine and emergency admissions.
  • Assist in theatre and perform procedures within competence.
  • Contribute to complex case management and MDTs.
  • Provide clear written and verbal handovers.
  • Support service development.
  • Assist junior doctors and Specialist Nurses.
  • Engage in CME, teaching and audit.
