the post of a Locum Consultant Colorectal General Surgeon, fixed term until 31st March 2026.
The postholder will join the
existing surgical team within the Directorate of General Surgery delivering
care across South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. The post will
be based at South Tyneside Hospital but there will be a requirement to work
across both sites.
The post is full-time
comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs).

Main duties of the job
The post holder will join
the existing team of 18 General Surgeons providing emergency General Surgery
and possess specialist
skills in Lower GI Surgery. Emergency work would be
on a 1:6 basis, comprising a combination of 24 hour on call at South Tyneside
District Hospital and a separate day and night 12 hour service provision at
Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Overall
responsibilities of the role include the co-ordination and delivery of
strategic and operational aspects of General Surgery Services across South
Tyneside and Sunderland and the wider sub-regional catchment area. These will reflect National and Local
priorities including the strategic direction of the Trust and the Directorate
of General Surgery.
The post holder is expected to possess
Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons and clinical training
and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST in colorectal
Surgery.
The post holder will have excellent team working skills, a
flexible approach to service delivery and service improvement and an enquiring,
critical approach.

for Foundation Trainees has improved significantly in recent years and is very
good. The post-holder will be expected to partake in training of
all medical and other staff as well as undergraduates to ensure trainees have a
good training experience.
A well-stocked library with
professional librarians is situated in the postgraduate medical education
centre at the Sunderland Royal Hospital site.
Newcastle Medical School and its
Postgraduate facilities are 15 miles away.
The appointee will be expected to
undergo continuing medical education and appraisal in accordance with the
guidelines agreed by the Royal College of Surgeons and GMC and the post-holder
will be entitled and encouraged to take regulatory study leave.
There are also educational links with
Sunderland, Durham and Northumbria Universities.
