experienced and motivated Trauma & Orthopaedics Consultant with a special
interest in spinal surgery? South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust
is looking for a dedicated professional to join our dynamic, forward-thinking

East, working alongside 27 Consultants across two hospital sites. With access

fully equipped Orthopaedic Outpatient Department, and an established Spinal
MDT, this is an opportunity to deliver high-quality care and shape the future
of spinal orthopaedic services.
The successful
applicant will be expected to build an elective practice in spines, and will
also have an interest in Trauma Surgery, as they would be expected to be a part
of the general orthopaedic on-call Trauma rota across both sites.

Main duties of the job
As a Consultant
in Trauma & Orthopaedics (Spine Interest), you will play a key role in
delivering expert spinal orthopaedic care, contributing to trauma services, and
supporting education and research initiatives.
The successful
candidate will join the established spinal team at STSFT, which currently
comprises of 4 full time consultants, 2 specialist physiotherapists and 3 specialist
nurse practitioners.
You will have
an interest in the generality of spinal orthopaedics, as it is expected that
this likely to make up all of the elective practice. Development of a relevant
special interest within spinal orthopaedics would be encouraged.
Your main
responsibilities will include:

Clinical
Care: Providing expert management of spinal orthopaedic conditions,
participating in the general trauma rota, and supporting the development of
spinal services within the Trust.
- Surgical
Excellence: Performing elective spinal procedures and contributing to complex
trauma cases, including spinal and pelvic fractures.
- Teaching
& Research: Engaging in undergraduate and postgraduate education, mentoring
junior doctors, and participating in research initiatives within the Trust.
- Leadership
& Service Development: Contributing to clinical governance, quality
improvement, and the strategic development of orthopaedic services.
- Collaborative
Working: Engaging with a multi-disciplinary team of consultants,
physiotherapists, and orthopaedic practitioners to provide the highest standard
of patient care.

post holder is expected to possess FRCS (Tr & Orth) or equivalent and to be
on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of taking up the post. Fellowship
training covering spinal orthopaedics is essential and additional training in
the management of general trauma would be desirable.
The
post holder is expected to attend the bi-monthly Directorate meetings and take
part in monthly Audit and Clinical Governance meetings and related activities.
The post-holder will undergo annual appraisal and 5 yearly revalidation in line
with GMC requirements. The post holder will also be expected to develop the
service in keeping with national guidance and local needs.
The
appointee will be expected to undergo continuing medical education in
accordance with the guidelines agreed by the Royal College of Surgeons and the
post-holder will be entitled and encouraged to take regulatory study leave.
The
T&O Department regularly receives medical students from the University of
Newcastle upon Tyne and Sunderland plus occasionally from elsewhere and the
post-holder will be expected to assist with their teaching.
The
