for the post of a Trust Doctor within the directorate of General Surgery,
Surgical Division at Sunderland. This is a fixed term post for 12 months
commencing 05.08.2026 and is primarily based at the Sunderland Royal Hospital.
The successful applicants
will participate in a 15-person emergency rota that provides 2 resident doctors
covering General Surgery, Urology & Vascular 7 days a week working 12.5
hour shifts. Non-emergency work will be spent in Upper GI (Bariatric) and
Colorectal teams covering ward duties, outpatient clinics and elective
operating lists. The post may suit a post foundation training doctor wishing to
gain further experience in General Surgery/in a large acute hospital.
The Surgical Division is dynamic and forward
thinking. Education, innovation, change, clinical effectiveness and efficiency
are integral to the planning and development process across the Directorates.
The Division is committed to working towards delivery of patient-centric care,
improving both delivery and access to services for all the local populations.
The successful candidates will be expected to support senior colleagues in
shaping and maintaining the service of this modern forward-thinking Division.
Main duties of the job
Overall
responsibilities include the provision of high quality clinical care on a daily
basis within, inpatient wards areas, outpatient settings and theatre
facilities. To ensure timely, effective and efficient quality patient care
highlighting any concerns to senior staff as necessary. To assist/undertake
supervised surgical procedures where instructed/trained to do so, in elective
and emergency situations. To assist Consultant staff in theatre, working within
boundaries of own limitations and GMC guidance.
There will be
opportunities to perform research and to learn surgical procedures from an
experienced team of General Surgeons. The unit has both specialist Upper and
Lower GI surgeons as well as a comprehensive General Surgery department.
Active
participation is expected in the departmental meetings, rota management and
departmental junior doctor teaching programmes.
Clinical audit projects are actively encouraged in the department,
whilst participation in clinical governance and morbidity & mortality
meetings is mandatory.
The successful applicants will be guided in their development by an Educational and Clinical Supervisor and will have access to a range of educational opportunities equivalent to Foundation Programme teaching at year 2 level.
