Job summary

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint FY3 doctors to trust grade posts to commence from August 2023 for a fixed term period of 12 months (with possible extension).

The successful candidates will have completed foundation programme training or equivalent and will have a demonstrable interest in contributing to a busy and interesting surgical division.

This post will provide an excellent grounding in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery for candidates wishing to specialise in this area.

All successful candidates will have named Clinical and Educational Supervisors who will also provide career advice and support for onward career progression. Study leave and professional development for junior medical staff is actively supported by the Directorate of Trauma and Orthopaedics.

A regular appraisal process will be in place. Extensive training and experience will be gained with timetabled sessions in theatre and clinic as well as through formal protected teaching and lectures provided every week as part of our dedicated teaching programme for junior doctors. There are monthly departmental morbidity and mortality / clinical governance meetings during which participation is expected from the successful candidates. There will be opportunities to undertake audit and research throughout the term of the post is actively encouraged.

Main duties of the job

We perform a broad spectrum of acute and elective upper limb, lower limb and spinal surgeries in the department and have a well-established enhanced recovery programme for patients undergoing hip and knee joint replacement surgery and dedicated upper limb trauma lists for complex upper limb trauma.

Extensive training and experience will be gained with timetabled sessions in theatre and clinic as well as through formal lectures as part of our dedicated Trauma & Orthopaedics teaching programme for junior doctors. There are daily Trauma meetings in which patients admitted in the previous 24 hours are discussed. There are monthly morbidity and mortality / clinical governance meetings during which participation is expected from the successful candidate. There will be opportunities to undertake audit and research in the department.

The successful candidate will also be allocated an educational supervisor who will also provide career advice and support for onward career progression.
