Job summary

The Urology Department at Sunderland Royal Hospital is delighted to be able to offer two Trust Doctor position's working at an SHO level. The two posts are for one twelve month position and one eight month position. The post holder will be based at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

You will have the opportunity to develop your skills across the range of our service, including the chance to support theatres and gain valuable experience for your log book.

The Urology Department at Sunderland Royal Hospital is a large and busy unit, incorporating a wide range of clinical sub-specialties. It has a 24 bed ward and also operates from the surgical day-case unit. There are two dedicated Urology theatres and other theatres available within the trust. The department has a bespoke unit for outpatients, flexible cystoscopy, urodynamics, transrectal ultrasound and lithotripsy. The department is dynamic and have recently led new services including a rapid access unit, one stop clinics and new surgical procedures.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for dynamic and enthusiastic candidates who can make a real contribution to the development of the unit, and you would be encouraged to participate in clinical audit, and the production of papers for publication.

You will participate in the junior doctor on-call rota, gaining valuable insight into the urology service.

The remit of the post will be for two positions. One full time fixed term post for 12 months and one full time fixed term post for 8 months. This is a Trust Grade level appointment for trainees seeking opportunities to enhance their careers, for trainees seeking to gain experience in Urology as part of surgical or general practice training and for those aiming for further experience in hospital-based medicine.

i Clinical

  • Full shift working pattern (40hrs) with clinical exposure divided between ward management, provision of emergency care and attendance at routine Urology clinic/theatre sessions.
  • Participation in the Urology first-on-call tier plus night shift cover Urology first –tier on-call team.
  • Responsible to the Clinical Director.

ii. The post

  • The post holder will be part of the team delivering clinical care to the Urology Wards at Sunderland Royal Hospital, for both planned and emergency admissions.
  • The department provides emergency Urology management for the Accident and Emergency and GP services in South Tyneside and Sunderland. The post holder will provide diagnostic advice and emergency management in a supported environment. The post holder will also cover the Urology first on call rota when on night shift.
  • The rota is designed to allow maximal attendance at educational sessions, either in theatre or outpatient clinics. The department is also strongly supported by Allied Health Professionals, allowing an enhanced learning experience.

Regular teaching sessions take place within the department. The post holder would also be expected to contribute towards these and to provide education and support to junior colleagues.
