Job summary

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Senior Neonatal Advanced Clinical Practitioner/Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner who is ready to progress to middle-grade level (Band 8b).

Due to expansion of the Tier 2 Senior Neonatal ACP workforce, an exciting opportunity has arisen to join a team of ACPs/ANNPs within the Neonatal Service at Sunderland Royal Hospital. We are a dynamic service with many opportunities for personal development, involvement in research and development of the Senior ACP/ANNP role.

This post sits within the remit of the Neonatal Tier 2 Medical rota and as a result you will be required to participate in the care of babies throughout the service from the postnatal wards to leading care in the intensive care area. A shift system is in place which includes weekends and night shifts.

Depending on experience, up to 12 months induction period at tier 1 level working in a Band 8a post can be facilitated in order to develop competencies required for band 8b (the job description for band 8a is included for information only. Main duties of the job

The Neonatal Service based at Sunderland Royal Hospital offers a range of Neonatal Intensive Care facilities. There are approximately 4000 deliveries and the Neonatal Unit has 7 ITU/HDU cots and 9 Special care cots. The neonatal unit is the lead provider for babies requiring intensive care from Durham, Gateshead, Northumbria and Carlisle who are 26 weeks gestation and above.

Continuing professional development is encouraged and you will be expected to participate actively in research, quality and safety, audit and guidelines.

The neonatal unit operates on a three tier medical rota, tier 1 junior doctors/junior ACP tier 2 middle grade doctor/senior Neonatal Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP), tier 3 neonatal consultants.

To undertake tier 2 duties on the neonatal rota with provision of 24 hour care, 7 days a week and function at a senior practitioner level, to provide autonomous clinical care:

Initiate and assume responsibility for the immediate, critical and ongoing management of sick neonates and have freedom to interpret and act within broad policies and protocols as expected at tier 2.

Practise independent and supplementary prescribing as per the department of health initiative to allow for safe and efficient access to medication administration at the point of need.

Work as an integrated member of the multidisciplinary neonatal team at Tier 2 level, using evidence based approach together with advanced clinical skills to provide holistic care for the neonate and family.

The post holder must:

Assume a leading role and responsibility in evidence based clinical practice.

Be a competent practitioner, leading innovation and demonstrating clinical expertise to a complex case load.

Act as a resource and advisor, providing expertise to the multi-disciplinary team.

Provide individualised family orientated care utilising advanced clinical skills.

Support and facilitate the education and training of other members of the neonatal team, including doctors and nurses at all levels.

Comply with the trusts vision, values and behavioural compact.
