Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled and motivated individual to join our friendly nursing team within the Sexual Health Services at Sunderland Royal Hospital, the post is full time and permanent. The post holder will provide contraception and sexual health care to people attending the service.

We are looking for an individual with established skills and knowledge in relation to Sexual Health and Contraception, who is able to work autonomously as well as part of a team.

The main clinic is located at Chester Lodge in the grounds of Sunderland Royal Hospital and is open Monday to Friday 9am to 8pm, Saturday 9am to 1pm therefore shift patterns will vary, we also operate clinics across the local area.

The specialist nurse will:

  • Work as part of the multidisciplinary team working under the direction of line manager/Matron.
  • To offer a high standard of confidential, sensitive and non-judgemental contraceptive and sexual health nursing care within the clinical setting, while respecting the cultural beliefs and practices of the local population
  • To be able to obtain and document accurately all relevant aspects of the patients medical, sexual, obstetric, gynaecological, social and family history, deliver sexual and contraceptive care accordingly and refer onwards when necessary
  • Undertake asymptomatic and symptomatic sexual health screening for both male and female patients
  • Inform and counsel individuals and/or couples about the methods of contraception available to them, the detection of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)and risk reduction strategies
  • Interpret and discuss STI results with patients, seeking support from colleagues when required
  • Adhere to the Trust medicines management policy and work to patient group directives (PGDs) within the ISHS
  • Undertake clinical skills including Microscopy, Venepuncture and point of care testing
  • Perform male and female clinical examinations, including the collection of male and female genital swabs, review and removal of intrauterine contraception and checking of female barrier methods as appropriate
  • Able to insert and remove subdermal implants
  • To work within their boundaries of practice at all times and refer to senior nursing and/or medical colleagues when applicable
  • To teach the chosen method of contraception and re-appraise appropriateness at follow up visits
    • To provide an empathetic and supportive service for young people and be aware of issues in relation to child sexual exploitation and childrens safeguarding
    • To be competent in discussing/recording/cascading issues related to FGM, including childrens and adults safeguarding. Referring appropriately where applicable
    • To comply with STSFT mandatory and statutory training schedule, including safeguarding children and adults
    • To be aware of and maintain confidentiality at all times
    • To undertake any other clinical duties assigned by the service Manager
    • To be punctual and contribute to the smooth running of the clinic
    • To be able to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings, covering clinics across Sunderland Sexual Health Service and Community venues when and where required

  • Current 1st level NMC registration.
  • Degree in nursing studies or relevant clinical degree or evidence that currently working towards this (UK equivalent).
  • Mentorship certificate/Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience.
  • Advanced Diploma in Sexual Health or equivalent.
  • Contraceptive Health qualification or equivalent.
  • Clinical skills accreditation or willingness to complete.

Desirable

  • Leadership and Management Course.
