Job summary

An opportunity has become available for an enthusiastic general practice doctor, who would like to undertake an additional role of providing adult medical advice for fostering.

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Fostering Medical Advisor to provide medical assessments for existing and potential foster carers to support the foster care application process.

The post is offered on a sessional basis 2 sessions per week(4 hours per session) on a fixed term 6-12 month contract. The sessions can be shared between more than 1 successful applicant to fit in with other commitments and elements of their role.

Main duties of the job

Local authorities have a statutory duty to provide sufficient accommodation for Looked After Children. As part of the recruitment process, foster carers undergo an assessment by a medical practitioner. This is then reviewed by the Fostering Medical Advisor and implications for a child placed with the applicant are considered. Enquiries or arrangement for a preliminary visit are welcome.

The post is offered on a sessional basis 2 sessions per week on a fixed term 6-12 month contract. The sessions could, dependant on applicants availability, be shared between two people to fit in with other commitments and elements of their role.

The work can be undertaken either office based (Childrens Centre Sunderland) or could also be provided remotely.

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • Full GMC registration.
  • MRCGP.
  • Certified GP with recent clinical practice experience.

Desirable

  • Paediatric experience.
  • Experience of working with the vulnerable/cared for/adopted child.
  • Have attended CoramBAAF course on Adult medical advice.

Knowledge & Skills

Essential

  • Management and Leadership skills.

Desirable

  • Have evidence of good leadership skills in undertaking previous projects.

Personal Qualities

Essential

  • Possess good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Be able to work as part of a team.
