PLEASE NOTE This Vacancy is only available to current employees of STSFT and doctors employed by Lead Employer Trust based at STSFT.

This is a 12 months fixed term post from August 2026.

This exciting opportunity is designed for doctors to develop experience in Emergency Medicine (EM) whilst pursuing a funded Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education. Clinical experience afforded aligns to the objectives and curriculum of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine. Successful applicants will be working alongside the existing tier of EM Junior trainees and would spend 80% of their time working in the Emergency Department and 20% of their time completing the Postgraduate Certificate and leading on some of the departments in-house teaching programmes.

Main duties of the job

The Trust has Emergency Departments at both Sunderland Royal Hospital and South Tyneside Hospital with the department at Sunderland benefiting from 24/7 registrar presence and 16 hours of ED consultant supervision, 7 days per week. There is a well-established programme for induction as well as Emergency Clinical Practitioner, Resident Doctor and Registrar teaching programmes. Each department has access to Point of Care Ultrasound machines as well as low fidelity simulation and training equipment. Clinical working time will be a combination of day, late and night shifts as well as weekend working. Applicants will need to have an interest in pursuing a career in an acute care specialty, have completed Foundation Programme training with minimum of 4 month experience in Emergency Medicine and hold a valid I/ALS. While prior experience with teaching is desirable it is not mandatory and successful applicants will require motivation to self-direct completion of the Postgraduate Certificate although supervision will be provided.
