is an exciting opportunity to work in a modern and fast paced Emergency
Department while building experience and exposure in Pre-hospital Emergency
Medicine (PHEM). Sunderland Royal Hospital ED benefits from 24/7 Speciality Doctor Cover and Consultant cover 16 hours a
day, 7 days a week. Of our 25 Consultants, 4 work in the pre-hospital field
with Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) and Sunderland is the base unit
within the North-East for the PHEM Specialty Trainee.
This
post is designed for an Emergency Medicine Resident Doctor (Speciality Doctor) with
membership level qualifications to gain further experience as a senior decision
maker in the ED whilst gaining experience of the provision of care in the
pre-hospital field. This experience will be gained by close working with GNAAS
with the opportunity for clinical shifts, training exposure and QIP as well as
other self-directed experiences. This post would be ideal for anyone wishing to
develop a portfolio to aid application to PHEM training and as such prior
experience as an Emergency Medicine registrar is essential, as is evidence of
an enthusiasm for PHEM.
Main duties of the job
The Trust has Emergency Departments at
both Sunderland Royal Hospital and South Tyneside Hospital with the department
at Sunderland benefiting from 24/7 middle grade presence and 16 hours of ED
consultant supervision, 7 days per week. There is a well-established programme
for induction as well as Emergency Clinical Practitioner, Junior Doctor and
Middle Grade teaching programmes. Each department has access to Point of Care
Ultrasound machines as well as high fidelity simulation and training equipment.
Clinical working time will be as part of a
registrar/middle grade rota with a combination of day, late and night shifts as
well as weekend working. You will act as a senior decision maker in the
Emergency Departments at STSFT under the supervision of the EM consultants, and
be the acting Emergency Physician In Charge (EPIC) overnight.
Applicants will need to have experience as
an Emergency Department Registrar, and have membership level RCEM
qualifications as well as valid ALS. While prior interest in pre-hospital
emergency medicine is mandatory. Salary will be dependent on skills and
experience.

Job description
Job responsibilities
The remit of the post will be for one position which will be a full time fixed term post for 12 months. This
is a Trust Doctor level appointment for trainees seeking opportunities to enhance their careers and for
trainees seeking to gain experience in Emergency Medicine.
i Clinical
Full shift working pattern (45hrs) with clinical exposure and providing direct patient care in the
Adult and Paediatric Emergency Departments and Urgent Treatment Centre. Supervision is
provided by 24-hour middle grade cover, with consultant supervision provided 08:00-midnight,
7 days per week.
The postholder will participate on the out of hours rota.
The postholder will be responsible to the Clinical Director.
ii. The post
The postholder will be part of an extensive team delivering clinical care to the Adult and
Paediatric Emergency Department at Sunderland Royal Hospital with exposure to the Urgent
Treatment Centre.
The postholder will simultaneously gain experience in pre-hospital emergency medicine utilising
20% of their hours to complete observer shifts/training days and QIP with Great North Air
Ambulance Service (GNAAS) and North East Ambulance Service (NEAS).
The rota is designed to allow completion of pre-hospital shifts and training days. The department
is also strongly supported by Allied Health Professionals, allowing an enhanced learning
experience.
Regular teaching sessions take place within the department. The post holder would also be
expected to contribute towards these and to provide education and support to junior colleagues.
Communication
The post holder should be readily available for consultation on any patient at the request of medical
staff during hours rostered for clinical duties. There are regular team and directorate meetings that
should be attended.
Clinical Management
The post holder should manage their own workload within the agreed timetable and ensure all
administrative duties are included within this. They should offer support to other colleagues who are
attached as part of their placements to the unit.
Research And Audit
The Emergency Department is actively involved in clinical research, audit and QIP. The post holder
will be supported to participate in ongoing projects and to develop research projects in their own areas
of interest. The post holder will be encouraged to be involved in at least one project which can produce
a publication in a peer reviewed journal, and present work at the regular Clinical Governance meetings.
Administration
The post holder will be expected to perform a number of administrative duties in relation to their own
clinical activity and as delegated by the Emergency Medicine Consultants. This will include relevant
patient documentation and management of results.

To report any incidents, accidents and near misses in accordance with the Trust Incident Policy.
