and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust is offering an exceptional opportunity for an Ultrasound
Fellow in Paediatric Emergency Medicine. This one-year fellowship combines
hands-on clinical experience in a purpose-built Paediatric Emergency
Department -PED-at Sunderland Royal Hospital with a fully
funded Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Ultrasound at Teesside
University.
The PED is a
standalone, state-of-the-art facility serving approximately29,000
children annually, with features including dedicated resuscitation bays,
high-dependency beds, and a Childrens Short Stay Assessment Unit. The
post holder will split their time between clinical work (80%) and academic
development (20%), gaining advanced skills in paediatric emergency
care and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS)applications.
Supported by a
multidisciplinary team and the Sunderland Ultrasound Faculty, you will
benefit from expert mentorship, hands-on ultrasound training, and opportunities
to engage in research and quality improvement projects. This fellowship
provides the ideal platform for clinicians eager to enhance their clinical and

Main duties of the job
The Ultrasound
Fellow will play a key role in providing high-quality care to children
presenting with a range of conditions in the Paediatric Emergency
Department - PED- at Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Clinical Duties:
Assess, treat, and
manage paediatric patients with illnesses and injuries, including
life-threatening conditions.
Participate in
resuscitation and trauma management.
Maintain accurate
and timely documentation in line with departmental standards.
Engage in clinical
governance activities such as audits and mortality reviews to ensure high
standards of care.
Ultrasound Training:
Complete a fully
fundedPostgraduate Certificate in Medical Ultrasoundat Teesside
University.
Develop POCUS
skills, including lung ultrasound, eFAST, musculoskeletal imaging, and
ultrasound-guided procedures.
Attend teaching
sessions, simulation training, and mentorship provided by theSunderland
Ultrasound Faculty.
Working Arrangements:
Work on arolling
rota(day, evening, weekend, and night shifts) to ensure exposure to
diverse clinical cases.

supervisor, regular feedback, and structured appraisals.

in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) whilst pursuing a funded Postgraduate
Certificate in Medical Ultrasound at the University of Teesside.
Successful applicants
will spend 80% of their time working in the Paediatric Emergency Department at
Sunderland Royal Hospital and 20% of their time completing the Postgraduate
Certificate which provides ultrasound skills in core and PEM ultrasound. This
course is the only one of its kind in the United Kingdom and is tailor made to
those who are hoping to pursue a career in PEM. Clinical modules include lung
ultrasound, shock and echo, eFAST as well musculoskeletal ultrasound.
Procedural skills such as POCUS guided IV access, foreign body identification
and retrieval and femoral nerve blocks will also form part of the curriculum.
Teaching will occur
both during focussed teaching in the Regional Ultrasound Simulation Centre at
Teesside University's Darlington Campus as well as during shop floor sessions
in PED.
The successful
candidate will be able to participate in Sunderland Ultrasound Faculty (SUNUS)
POCUS clinical governance activities and get involved with existing and
emerging research projects.
There is a
well-established PEM teaching programme at Sunderland Royal Hospital. The
successful applicant will participate in formal teaching in both PEM and as
well as POCUS delivered during CPD session by PEM consultants. The department
has dedicated access to Point of Care Ultrasound machines as well as high
fidelity simulation and training equipment.
Clinical working time will
