Job summary

We are seeking two part-time Switchboard Operators to join our friendly, professional and very busy service based at South Tyneside District Hospital, South Shields. This is an outstanding opportunity to join a team of Switchboard Operators who provide a high quality switchboard service on behalf of South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. This is an essential service used both during office hours and out of hours by service users, all levels of NHS staff, NHS Partnerships and outside agencies such as the Police, Ambulance service etc. and operates 24/7, 365 days a year.

This is a busy and critical environment and we are seeking Switchboard Operators who have the ability to use their own initiative and work as team players. Once training has been fully completed you will be able to operate as a lone worker and must be able to remain calm under pressure.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the job role are to provide the Trust with an efficient and effective 24-hour telephonist service, which assists and advises both external and internal callers, connects them to the appropriate extension and administrates emergency callouts i.e. clinical emergency calls, fire alarms, medical gas alarms, and lift entrapments.

Collates clinical on-call rosters and contacts the appropriate staff as and when required.

As well as the above shifts we are also offering the post-holder the opportunity to join the Switchboard Bank which involves covering additional shifts as and when required e.g. for reasons of annual leave and sickness.

Demonstrate a high level of interpersonal, communication and customer service skills

Demonstrate a caring and compassionate nature

Demonstrate an ability to understand instructions and follow / take appropriate action

Demonstrate knowledge and skills of operating a switchboard system

Uses the pager system and issues pagers to staff accordingly.

Deals with general queries to switchboard.
