Job summary

The South Tyneside and Sunderland Medical Physics Service provides services to Sunderland Royal Hospital, South Tyneside Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Gateshead, providing per annum approximately 9000 diagnostic nuclear medicine patient investigations, 100 radionuclide therapy administrations, 4500 bone density measurements and 2000 vascular ultrasound studies. There is a small Clinical Instrumentation and Physiological Measurement section at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Currently the Service has four dual detector gamma cameras, a dedicated cardiac camera, two bone densitometers and a state of the art 12-headed SPECT-CT with CZT Detectors.

The Trust is providing additional Medical Physics Services through a service level agreement and you advise the Trust on this Agreement.

The Head of Nuclear Medicine Physics Post is advertised as a training progression Post and, as such, the Job Description articulates the key areas for development for you to progress from Band 8b to Band 8c. Those suitable for Appointment at Band 8b will be provided with a clear progression and training plan, including support for those already working towards higher scientific specialist Registration.

Main duties of the job

The Head of Nuclear Medicine Physics will be a HCPC registered Clinical Scientist specialising in Nuclear Medicine but with sufficient knowledge of other Medical Physics disciplines to manage and develop those services.

You must have excellent communication, management and leadership skills and be able to develop effective professional relationships within the Trust, regionally and nationally.

You will have proven scientific leadership and management skills, be able to develop and implement strategy, be motivational and able to ensure the delivery of high-quality scientific services through continuous improvement.

In summary, you are responsible for all Scientific/Technical Aspects (including Radiopharmacy) of the Nuclear Medicine (NM) and Bone Densitometry (BD) Service within the STSFT Medical Physics units across all Trust sites. You are responsible for the Clinical Scientist provision across the Department including Radiation Protection, associated legislation, equipment management, QA programs and new equipment purchases across the three Nuclear Medicine sites, consulting with Clinical Lead as required.
