Job summary

We are recruiting registered nurses into cohort 3 of our Cancer Internship Programme, due to start September 2024. The aim is to develop the cancer workforce and provide excellence in cancer care across our organisation. The Cancer Internship Programme aims to:

  • Support succession planning within cancer nursing by providing an opportunity for registered nurses to develop more specialist knowledge, skills and experience through working directly with our cancer teams.
  • Retain experienced and motivated qualified staff by providing career development opportunities for individuals interested in cancer nursing and capable of progressing to specialist practice.
  • Develop the clinical competence, skills and knowledge of each successful intern, to enrich patient experience in our clinical areas and ensure excellence in patient care.
  • Enable the intern through the programme learning outcomes to make positive service improvements for cancer within their area of practice.

Main duties of the job

The duration of the programme is 18 months and successful applicants will be committed to 7.5 hrs per week learning. Interns will be expected to:

  • Develop their knowledge and skills through the utilisation of a competency framework.
  • Work as part of a specialist cancer team at STSFT, through the provision of clinical placements across a variety of cancer specialties on both sites
  • Work collaboratively with our Personalised Care Team, to increase the interns understanding of the wider support needs and services involved in the cancer patients journey.
  • Identify a service improvement initiative for cancer to implement within their current area of practice, to improve the care and experience of cancer patients.
  • Access other relevant cancer training to develop their knowledge and skills.
  • Complete Principles of Integrated Practice in Cancer and other Long-Term Conditions, module accredited at level 6 or 7.
  • Complete the Clinical Skills in Healthcare module.

  • Current 1st level NMC registration
  • Degree in nursing studies or relevant clinical degree
  • Mentorship certificate/Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience
  • 100% compliant with Trust Statutory and Mandatory training

Experience

  • Have worked as a registered nurse for a minimum of 2 years / and must have completed preceptorship period if internationally educated
  • Evidence of continued practice development

Desirable

  • Experience of coordinating care for a caseload of patients
  • Evidence of leading innovation in practice
  • Experience of leading a team
  • Evidence of leading change management
