Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust as an Apprentice Healthcare Assistant. You will undertake a formal apprenticeship training programme, in order to gain the knowledge, skills and competence to work as a Healthcare Assistant.

You will undergo initial formal training in order to achieve the competences required to achieve the Care Certificate and be allocated a Registered Nurse as a mentor to provide support and an experienced Healthcare Assistant as a buddy for guidance. You will complete key evidence including Competency Based Assessments (CBAs) in order to be assessed and deemed competent.

Once the Care Certificate has been successfully completed, you will continue training to complete the agreed apprenticeship standard, but will work with less direct supervision carrying out Healthcare Assistant duties. You will receive off the job training, which will include workplace training which develops your skills and competence.

The duration of the apprenticeship is 18 months, subject to regular reviews to demonstrate progress. You will commence on Annex 21* of the salary stated and to support the development in the role, you will be required to complete L2 Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship Standard. Following the successful completion of the a you will move into a substantive position

*Annex21 is a NHS training allowance that is a percentage of the banding

Main duties of the job

The apprentice will carry out direct patient care support duties for patients, working on a closely supervised basis until the Care certificate has been successfully completed. The level of direct supervision in performing duties which require training will be decreased once the post holder has been assessed as competent to carry out particular duties.

1. Participate in delivering all aspects of direct patient care

2.Escort and transfer patients to different areas or departments of the hospital, acting in a professional manner whilst doing this and having regard to the patients needs and feelings.

3.Chaperone medical and nursing staff as required.

4.Assist registered nursing staff with any nursing intervention or treatments as required.

5.Develop skills and competencies as per HCA portfolio, and competency based assessments at level 1 and level 2.

6. Undertake tasks delegated by the Registered Nurse

7. Clean all medical equipment for patient use in line with Infection Prevention Control policies.

8. Document clearly, as per policy patients property and valuables on admission/transfer from ward/department

The apprentice will be expected to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times and that they do not access patient related information (either electronic or paper based), which they do not need during the course of their work.
