STSFT are seeking enthusiastic and
motivated community staff nurses who
wish to develop their careers in District Nursing by studying for the Community
Specialist Practice District Nursing Post Graduate Diploma/MA Community Specialist
Practice District Nursing to commence Sept 2025 for 51 weeks or by undertaking the DN
apprenticeship and remaining in their current B5 role for the duration of the 18-month
course also commencing September 2025.
Both
full time (SPQ) and part time (DN apprenticeship) include clinical skills and
V300 modules as well as developing leadership and management skills.
Candidates
will be asked for their preferred route at interview, but this is not
guaranteed.
SPQ
students will be seconded for the duration of the course (12months), while
apprentice DNs will remain in a B5 post for the duration of the apprenticeship
(18months).
Applicants
must meet the following criteria to apply:
- Have an NMC-valid registration as a
registered adult nurse.
- Currently working in District Nursing.
- Up to date with mandatory training.
- Full driving license and use of car.
The
following are desirable criteria and may be used for selection:
- Minimum, 1 years post registration
and preferably community nursing experience.
- Leadership and management skills.

Main duties of the job
As an
apprentice District Nurse or SPQ student, the post holder undertakes both a
taught course leading to a recordable District Nursing qualification and a
period of taught practice with a qualified District Nursing Sister.
Both
programmes are designed to prepare the individual to undertake the following
duties:
- To have
overall responsibility for the assessment, planning, provision and evaluation
of District Nursing Care as detailed in the District Nursing Specification.
- To provide
effective management and leadership to all members of the nursing team,
including recruitment, supervision, appraisal, training and development.
- To
contribute to and actively participate in service development based on
identified needs and driven by the national and local health care agendas.
- To
prescribe effectively as a non-medical prescriber.
- To be able
to work at an advanced level of clinical decision making.
On successful completion of either course candidates will be guaranteed an interview for vacant Band 6 District Nurse posts, if they are unsuccessful in gaining a Band 6 DN post they will be guaranteed a band 5 staff nurse post in the Trust until future opportunities arise.
Please note: holidays for the SPQ are fixed in line with the University calendar with no flexibility.
