Therapist to join our Community Dental Service in South Tyneside, Sunderland
and Gateshead and are looking for a caring, motivated and enthusiastic Dental
Therapist to join our friendly team in a supportive environment.
This
is a permanent part time (22.5 hours) position, working 6 sessions per week.

Main duties of the job
This
is a clinical post providing dental care to patients of the Community Dental
Service within the South of Tyne and Wear.
Working
as part of a team, you will provide care for our service users, those patients
with dental needs outside of general dental practice (GDP) care.
The
service provides care for adults and children with Additional Needs and Learning
Disabilities, including medically compromised patients who require treatment in
a specialised setting.
The
post will be based at one of our clinics in South Tyneside, Sunderland or
Gateshead, although there will be a need to travel to and work from any of our
sites.

The post holder
will be expected to carry out a variety of clinical and administrative duties
within the Community Dental Service, including the provision of oral care for
priority groups.
Dental
care will include a full range of dental treatment within the competencies and
scope of a dental Therapist as defined Scope of Practice and as set out in the
General Dental Council (Professions Complementary to Dentistry) (Dental
Hygienists and Dental Therapists) Regulations 2013. Dental Therapists work
under a written prescription from a Dental Officer employed by the Trust.
Communicate with people in a manner that is
appropriate to purpose and consistent with their level of understanding,
background, culture and preferred way of communicating.
Communicate
with Dental Laboratories and other health care professionals regarding patient
care and prosthetic devices.
Maintain
appropriate records ensuring compliance with the agreed record keeping systems
of the Trust, including completion of NHS Dental Forms.
Obtain
informed consent where appropriate and document in accordance with Trust
procedures.
Obtain
sensitive personal, social and medical information, often of a complex nature;
and in situations where interpreters may be necessary or where patients have
learning and communication difficulties. It will be necessary to explain
medical and dental information in everyday language and terms so that
interpreters can translate for patients.
Assess
and prepare patients referred to the Dental Service as part of Episodes of
Care/Courses of Treatment (including but not restricted to severe phobics and
the highly emotionally disturbed, patients with special needs and those in
severe pain seeking emergency care). Cope with highly emotive and sometimes
frequent hostile interactions with distressed patients and members of the
public.
