Job summary

The Medical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) is an established service delivering care to suitable emergency medical patients.

The main aim of the service is to rapidly assess, diagnose and treat emergency medical patients within the same day, improving their patient journey and increasing bed capacity and patient flow within the hospital. At present we discharge up to 80% of the patients through medical SDEC, they may require further treatment , however this is achieved by patients returning the following day and therefore not requiring a hospital stay.

Job responsibilities

To work in partnership with the Registered Nurses and MDT in delivering care to patients

  • Admit patients
  • On-going care and observation of patients on department
  • Organise and assist in the transfer of patients for diagnostics and or in patient ward moves
  • Perform clinical observations, document and report to RN.
  • Perform venepuncture and cannulation
  • Wound care
  • Perform ECGs
  • Fluid balance monitoring, documenting and reporting
  • Document care using Trust approved care plansMeet the holistic needs of the patient and escalates appropriately.

Essential

  • Completion of a competency-based workbook
  • Good standard of numeracy and literacy

Desirable

  • Short courses to undertake patient and clinical care duties

Experience

Essential

  • Ability to adapt and learn in a health care environment

Desirable

  • Previous band 2 experience of working within a care environment/NHS
  • Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of working with the public
  • Basic food handling

Technical Skills Competencies

Essential

  • Understanding of basic physiology e.g. normal vital signs, fluid balance, nutritional requirements etc
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively (to understand and be understood)
  • Ability to follow clear instruction and feed back to senior staff.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, as well as on own initiative.
  • Wound Care skills and experience
  • IT literate
  • Willingness to complete Venepuncture and Cannulation as this will be an important part of this role.
  • ECG Competency or willingness to learn.

  • Working knowledge of Ecamis, EPR, EOBS, ENA
  • Venepuncture and cannulation
