Job summary

University Hospitals Dorset is currently seeking a motivated and enthusiastic person to join our team of Clinical Coders. Our Clinical Coding Department has recently been restructured to meet the increasing demands of the NHS and to support the Trust's business activity.

Senior Clinical Coders are part of a team responsible for the accuracy, completeness and timeliness of the Trust's computer based Clinical Coding systems in line with National Standards.

You will:

  • Extract, analyse and code information from the patient's electronic medical record into a coded format using OPCS and ICD-10 formats.
  • Communicate complex coding examples to relevant members of staff.
  • Exercise judgement in the interpretation of information to ensure accuracy.
  • Organise own work loads and work within deadlines.
  • Continual personal development

This role will be offered as a Band 4.

Base Location: The Coding Department offer a flexible working approach, offering both office and home based working

Main duties of the job

  • Senior Clinical Coder's have demonstrable experience within a clinical coding department and intending to study for the accreditation.
  • To extract, analyse and code information from patient records. Locating and collating missing case notes and information, as necessary.
  • To deal with enquiries and liaise with clinicians.
  • Act as a mentor to less experienced clinical coding staff.
  • They may also assist in the production of ad hoc reports on patient-based activity.
