Consultants in Anaesthesia

Poole and Bournemouth Hospitals are reconfiguring services to improve access to specialist and consultant care for emergency pathways and ensure high quality, high volume patient-centred elective care by redeveloping these two Trusts into Major Emergency and Major Planned Care sites. This is part of a wider Dorset vision to transform our hospitals, community services and primary care to enable us to meet the needs of local people and deliver better outcomes for patients.

This is an exciting opportunity for applicants to play a key role in developing services.

These posts are the result of a demand/capacity gap analysis. The post are full-time10PA contracts (which include 1.5SPA, with additional SPA for defined roles, and the opportunity to take an optional additional PA) and includes contribution to the out of hours consultant on call rota.

We are building new state of the art theatres at Poole in the near future. Bournemouth will become the major emergency hospital with major surgery, critical care, obstetrics, trauma and paediatrics and Poole the planned care site with a high volume of elective surgery. There will be significant capital investment in this project with additional new build theatres at Poole. The Bournemouth site will have a new build large critical care, emergency department and maternity unit.

DORSET CLINICAL SERVICES REVIEW

NHS services across Dorset are undergoing reconfiguration with the development of One Acute Network. There will be significant capital investment enabling a new build critical care at Bournemouth and new theatres at Poole. Bournemouth will become the emergency hospital with Poole providing elective services following an extensive review and consultation on provision of primary and secondary care. This represents an exciting opportunity for all consultants in the Trust to be involved in shaping services for the future.

Essential Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration Fellowship / Membership of the Royal College of Anaesthetists or completed a period of education & training in anaesthesia recognised by PMETB Completion of CCT training in Anaesthesia. Applicants may be interviewed within 6 months of anticipated achievement of CCT, or suitable equivalents. Before applicants are put forward for shortlisting checks will be made to ensure they meet the essential criteria listed above

Desirable

  • Previous experience working as a Consultant or ST7 equiv level
  • Postgraduate thesis/diploma Post CCT additional clinical experience

Clinical Training & Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge commensurate with the above qualifications and the ability to offer expert opinion on range of problems in both emergency and elective aspects of patients. Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients in theatre and in remote settings including transfers. Ability to perform within a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable

  • Relevant subspecialty higher or advanced level training in perioperative medicine, vascular, or ophthalmic anaesthesia.

Service Quality

Essential

  • Demonstrable interest in risk management and patient safety. Evidence of interest in peri-operative care with aim of optimising patient pathway. Evidence of interest in quality assurance. Evidence of successful involvement in quality improvement work. Interest in developing the service aligned to the needs of our patients.
