Job summary

Fantastic opportunity within a small friendly team to work as a Band 6 Occupational Therapist in Specialist Palliative Care. The post is to cover maternity leave and would be a 12 month fixed term/secondment contract. We have 50 hours to cover so could be flexible on full and/or part time for multiple successful applicants.

The post is based at the Macmillan Unit in Christchurch and covers both an in-patient and community setting providing the opportunity to extend and enhance professional skills in a friendly and supportive environment.

Main duties of the job

To provide skilled, patient centred, individualised occupational therapy assessment and care to specialist palliative care patients in both in-patient hospice and community settings.

To focus on 'what matters' to patients in formulating appropriate treatment plans which are meaningful to them. To work collaboratively with the MDT to optimise symptom control, functional and occupational independence, quality of life and to assist in facilitating discharge and or admission avoidance to enable patients to be in their preferred place of care.

To contribute to the education and peer support of other team members, students and the wider MDT through informal supervision, appraisal, in service training and external training opportunities.

To pro actively participate in continued professional development to enhance your professional skill set through appropriate media and learning opportunities.

To support team colleagues and the clinical team lead in the prioritisation, delivery and evaluation of service provision working collaboratively to adapt to the changing needs of the service.

To evaluate treatment outcomes and maintain patient records (paper and electronic). Contribute to the improvement and development of Occupational Therapy services. To provide evidence of compliance with clinical governance standards in order to contribute to the Trusts assurance for CQC quality and safety outcomes

Contribute to meeting the training needs of Occupational Therapy staff, other professionals and students in areas of skill and knowledge relevant to the post holders expertise. To undertake quality improvement projects as appropriate to meet the needs of the service. To complete risk assessments to ensure that risk in the service is managed and reported as required. All Occupational Therapy staff are responsible for the safe use of equipment and person handling including ensuring the competence of staff, carers and patients. All Occupational Therapy staff are required to participate in regular supervision sessions as agreed for their individual needs in line with the occupational therapy service supervision process.   • HCPC registration

  • Member of the royal college of occupational therapy
  • Completed post graduate communication training
  • postgraduate experience in palliative care

Experience

  • two years post graduate OT experience in a physical setting within the NHS
  • Experience of working with patients with a palliative diagnosis
  • Band 5 experience of core rotational roles
  • Experience of delivering education including IST programmes
  • Experience of working with complex multi pathologies, co morbidities and long term conditions

Desirable

  • Experience working with neurodegenerative conditions e.g. MND
  • Experience delivering supervision / teaching / mentoring to junior staff or students
  • Experience of working in the community setting
  • 3 years post graduate experience working in an NHS clinical setting
