Job summary

The post holder will join 4 consultant neonatologists in a 1 in 6 on call rota. The neonatal unit at Poole (UHD) is part of the TV& Wessex Neonatal ODN and is designated as a Local Neonatal Unit (LNU) and caters to a population of c775,000 people across Dorset and provides neonatal service to about 4400 deliveries/year. We are expecting additional transfers following the redesignation of Salisbury and Guernsey LNUs to SCBUs. There will be a planned contract of 10 programmed activities.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to:

  • Provide one 'hot' neonatal service week in 6.

  • Provide 2-3 neonatal clinics per month, and departmental meetings .

  • Participate in the neonatal on call rota.

  • Provide ST doctor, medical student and ANNP training and teaching

  • Support PMRT, MNSI, local panel review and other external investigations

  • The successful applicant for the post where cardiology specialist knowledge is required will contribute to the running of cardiology clinics for congenital heart disease, and care of babies who are in-patient with requirement for echocardiography

  • The successful applicant for the post taking on the lead role for risk will be responsible for supporting the regular meetings where cases are discussed - and the dissemination of the information gained at these meetings to the wider neonatal team. All consultants will be involved in the case discussions of those babies where they themselves were involved.

The Trust allocates a minimum of 1 SPA for revalidation; with the vast majority of consultants receiving an additional SPA for departmental, or regional work (e.g. for specified activity identified at appraisal), and additional allocations to support national work can also be incorporated. Educational experience will be useful given the number of trainees and medical students coming to the neonatal unit.
