Job summary

University Hospitals Dorset are recruiting a Locum Consultant in Restorative Dentistry for 12 months with a possibility to extend.

The role will focus on the dentistry needs of patients in three core services:

  • Head and Neck Cancer
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Trauma
  • Head and Neck Developmental Anomalies

Key information

  • 10 PA role
  • (Must work Tuesdays to attend Head & Neck MDT)
  • Based at Poole Hospital
  • Supported by an established multi-disciplinary team across OMFS/ENT/Oncology/Orthodontics
  • A supportive and proactive operational management team who will support the candidate to become embedded into post

Main duties of the job

Duties of the post include the following:

o The delivery of clinical excellence in Restorative Dentistry.

o Collaborative working with colleagues from within and outside the Trust.

o Provide clinical expertise in Restorative Dentistry, supporting and supervising members of the multidisciplinary teams.

o Provide a specialty service to the Trust with responsibility for the diagnosis and management of patients referred to the Restorative Dentistry service, attendance and active participation in Head & Neck MDT.

o Ensure that patients are provided with the highest possible standard of diagnosis, treatment and care in the most effective and timely way.

o To lead on development plans and delivery of key performance indicators for Restorative Dentistry.

o To supervise, train and advise junior medical and dental staff working at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust to ensure high standards of clinical practice and efficient use of resources.

o To maintain effective communication and working relationships with medical, scientific, management, technical and nursing staff, as required for performing the responsibilities of this post. This includes electronic communication within the department, the Trust, and with national and international colleagues.

o To lead by example and set and maintain high professional standards.

o The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of the new Consultant contract.

  • Collaborative working with colleagues from within and outside the Trust.

  • Provide advice to hospital clinicians, including consultants in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and a range of medical specialties
  • Liaise with specialist restorative practitioners working within the primary care sector and provide advice if requested.
  • Provide a high quality treatment service for patients with HNC, developmental abnormalities and severe trauma
  • Provide a high quality treatment service for patients requiring multidisciplinary care
Responsibility for Policy / Service Development
  • Keep up to date with latest restorative dentistry developments across the region and nationwide
  • Attend and play a key role in meetings where clinical leadership is required
  • Work with operational management to ensure the service continues to develop policies and pathways that are fit for purpose
  • Contribute clinical expertise to business cases, charitable funding applications and the procurement process for equipment
Responsibility for Finance, Equipment and Other Resources
  • Work with operational management to provide the most efficient restorative dentistry service that is cost-effective and considers the best ways to utilise the budget
  • Ensure the correct equipment is in situ and relevant business planning is done for new or additional equipment
Responsibility for Human Resources, e.g. Supervision, Training, HR Advice and Management
  • Supervise the clinical assistant and hygienists working within the service
  • Work with operational management to ensure efficient HR management of team including input into meetings regarding behaviours and performance
  • Role model the values of the Trust
Responsibility for Information Resources and Administrative Duties
  • Undertake all necessary administration associated with the care of their patients supported by secretarial and IT support
  • Respond to requests in a timely manner and communicate effectively with support services
  • Ensure information governance processes are strictly adhered to
  • Take responsibility for advising on the clinical guidelines for the retention periods for restorative dentistry patients
