Main duties of the job
About us
The Maternity Hospital is the centre for all high risk care in east Dorset and is fully equipped to meet the needs of women and babies with complications, as well as women with normal pregnancies and births. The Maternity Serviceprovides a comprehensive service, offering women as much choice as possible in their maternity care; over 4,000 babies are delivered byour maternity staff each year, either at home or within the birth centre and labour ward in the hospital. The Maternity Service offers a traditional model of midwifery care with separate teams for the acute and community service with on-going development of continuity models of care.

Care on the Birth Centre is managed completely by midwives and incorporates natural birthing techniques. It is fully equipped to support normal birth in a home-from-home environment.
Our two community teams cover Poole and Bournemouth area. We currently have a base at St Marys Hospital for the Poole team and then a Maternity Hub for the Bournemouth team. In addition to our community team we have a dedicated OASIS team which provides additional support to families. We also provide a homebirth service.
About us
The Labour Ward provides care for women with high risk pregnancies. There are two dedicated obstetric theatres, a two bedded high dependency unit, six birth rooms and one birthing room with a pool. We are keen to promote active birth and where continuous electronic fetal monitoring is advised, we regularly use telemetry monitoring, including for women with medium risk pregnancies who would like to birth in water. Aromatherapy is also used and encouraged on the Labour Ward.
We have a dedicated High Dependency team of Midwives who have undergone specialist training. Midwives on the Labour Ward have opportunities to develop their skills as a part of a cohesive multidisciplinary team.
We have a 12 bedded antenatal ward which also caters for induction of labour. Offering inpatient and outpatient induction of labour dependant on the individual woman's risk factors, we have streamlined our service to include offering women balloon catheter induction.
On the Poole site we have an Antenatal Day Assessment Unit and the Antenatal Clinic.
