Job summary

The Dorset All Age Community Eating disorders service has an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Practitioner in Eating Disorders. You will have the option of being based at Trinity Court in Dorchester or our new base Spring Court on the Kings Park Hospital site.

You will be joining the team offering evidenced based interventions, ensuring the highest standards of care for people of all ages with an eating disorder, their family/carers. A principal role is to assess, plan and implement evidence-based interventions and care to promote recovery from eating disorders. The post holder will hold their own caseload and work closely with all other members of the multi-disciplinary team. Although we are an all-age service, we welcome applications from practitioners who may prefer to focus on working with children or adults.

Experience of delivering NICE concordant eating disorders treatment is advantageous, however we also invite your expression of interest if you have transferable skills gained from working in other areas of mental health (adults and/or children) and would embrace the opportunity to develop the eating disorder specific competencies required. We will support and facilitate your development, tailored to your learning needs and experience.

Main duties of the job

The team will provide evidence-based interventions to people withan ED, their families/carers.

The principal role is in partnership with people with an ED, familiesand carers to assess, plan and implement evidence-based interventions and care to promote recovery from eating disorders. The post holder will hold their own caseload and work closely with all other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

A key secondary role is in liaison and joint working with other professionals, including general practice, CAMHS, adult mental health, LEA/schools and universities, to support integrated treatment and to widen awareness of the complexities involved in the management and treatment of Eating Disorders.

The post is offered as a 18-month secondment or fixed term contract. Full or Part-time (Monday to Friday 09:00 - 17:00). There is also an option of a permanent contract, with 18 months in the eating disorder service, followed by redeployment within the Trust should the demand for eating disorder services reduce.

Knowledge, Skills and Training

Essential

  • Educated to degree/ diploma level with a relevant professional qualification or equivalent experience

Desirable

  • Clinical/post graduate or equivalent level of experience and proven practice within the field of Eating Disorders and Child and Adolescent Mental Health or Adult mental health.
  • Post-graduate training and clinical expertise in at least one therapeutic model (ideally, for example CBT, DBT, Family Based Treatment, Motivational Enhancement Therapy or Inter Personal Therapy)

  • Skills and knowledge to determine when and how to mobilise appropriate health professionals in the event of medical emergencies.
  • A working knowledge of potential psychological, physiological and psychiatric complications of Eating Disorders, including medical implications of purging behaviours and advanced starvation.

  • Previous experience of working with people suffering with Eating Disorders and co-morbid illness.
