We have an exciting new full time opportunity (10 PA, with job share considered) for a Consultant in Child and Adolescent Liaison Psychiatry to work within an expanding and developing Liaison Psychiatry Service.

Our Liaison Psychiatry Service aims to provide a comprehensive service across three hospitals in the County of Dorset; Poole General Hospital (PGH), Royal Bournemouth Hospital (RBH), and Dorchester County Hospital (DCH).

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit a full-time (10 PA) Consultant in Child and Adolescent Liaison Psychiatry to join our newly expanding CAMHS team. You'll be proactive, positive and enthusiastic, bringing energy and fresh thinking to the way we work towards our vision of being Better Every Day through excellence, compassion and expertise.

This is a great time for you to move into our mental health services, we have made significant investment available for you to review and reconfigure community mental health services in line with the Mental Health Integrated Community Care Project (MMHICC) and you will be instrumental in shaping the future of this service.

You will work alongside 3 consultants in adult liaison psychiatry, one based at each of our three hospital sites. You'll work within an expanding and developing Liaison Psychiatry Service which aims to provide a comprehensive service to people attending all three acute hospital sites in the county.

The Liaison Psychiatry services at Bournemouth and Poole Hospitals have been accredited by the Royal College of Psychiatrists' Psychiatric Liaison Accreditation Network (PLAN).

Job responsibilities

The post-holder in CAMHS Liaison will provide clinical leadership to an experienced multidisciplinary team. Duties will include providing support to the team for routine and emergency clinical assessments on hospital wards and in Emergency Departments, providing training and clinical supervision for team members including the junior doctors, providing specialist consultation and advice to medical/ paediatric team colleagues including education and advice on the assessment of competence and capacity in children and young people, and undertaking such as assessment if the case is considered complex and it would benefit the childs care.

The Liaison Psychiatry Service works closely with other mental health staff based in the acute hospitals, including specialist alcohol nurses, and sessional psychological therapists who work patients with long term conditions or who are frequent attenders.

The CAMHS Liaison service will have strong links with all mental health services in the locality, particularly with the CAMHS community teams, the specialist teams working with young people, and the adolescent inpatient team. The service will also have strong links with adult mental health services, and will co-develop effective transition plans where relevant. The post holder will need to establish and maintain good working relationships with Childrens Social Care teams, with the Local Education Authorities, and with schools.

Teaching and training are important aspects of the role. The post-holder will have formal clinical supervision responsibilities for any trainees within the team and will be expected to provide day to day informal supervision of their work as required. Training responsibilities will be undertaken in line with Wessex Deanery and Royal College standards for best practice and the post holder will be supported to become an Educational and/or named Clinical Supervisor. The post holder will be expected to undertake ad-hoc teaching for different groups of staff or for particular hospital departments when requested.

The post holder is expected take part in the On-call rota unless an exemption is made following discussion with Chief Medical Officer/Deputy Chief Medical Officer. The On-call rota is Dorset wide on weekdays (1:25) and the postholder will be expected to cover the West of the county on weekends (1:12). The On call is paid at 3% on call availability supplement plus 0.25 APA. This is a joint general adult, learning disability, child psychiatry and old age psychiatry senior on-call rota supported by core trainees, higher trainees (Specialist Registrars) and SASG or ANP.

It is a 3 tier support system in the East over the weekdays and 2 tier system when covering the West. There is also a non-resident junior doctor on-call. When on-call the postholder is expected to provide advice and support to junior colleagues on-call, out of hours nursing and social work colleagues. When necessary, it is expected that the on-call consultant will review patients personally.

At weekends and on bank holidays there is a consultant led inpatient review for newly admitted patients to address problems with inpatients. This ensures that all patients admitted to our units are seen by a consultant within the first 24 hours of their admission and also review patients in longer term seclusions.

The post-holder will provide cross cover for annual, study and emergency sick leave with an assigned colleague. The allocated Consultant for CAMHS Psych liaison is the consultant covering Pebble lodge (CAMHS GAU). Cover can also be arranged via the wider group when designated cover arrangement is not possible. These cover arrangements will also take account the other medical staff in the locality team.
