Wexham Park Hospital is renowned for its excellent clinical care and friendly atmosphere. The Intensive Care department is funded to an acuity of 12 level 3 patients and has a team of 10 Consultant Intensivists supported by speciality doctors as well as intensive care and anaesthetic trainees. The Unit was rated Outstanding as part of the latest CQC inspection (2025).
This Clinical Fellow post in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) is aimed at anaesthetists or trainee intensivists with background interest in acute medicine, A&E and ICM. Such an appointment would also be of benefit to those who expect to practise hospital or pre-hospital medicine in an acute specialty in which there is currently no provision for higher ICM training, but for which higher training in ICM is of value. The post is for 12 months with scope for extension if needed.

The post offers the level and breadth of experience necessary for gaining approval for training. All training and experience will take place in a department recognised by the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) for core training in anaesthesia, by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM) for ICM training and by the GMC. Training / experience is competency-based and follows the curriculum developed by the RCoA and FICM.

Job responsibilities
The post will last for 12 months and will be based at Wexham Park Hospital. The content of training and experience will be based on the competencies defined by the FICM.
Through participation in the Fellowship, it is expected that the post-holder will
Gain a higher level of proficiency in the knowledge and skills required of an intensivist
Teach critical care medicine to more junior medical and nursing colleagues in a systematic, effective and safe manner
Appreciate and conduct audit and research pertaining to critical care to improve the service offered to patients
Present findings of this work at an appropriate regional / national meeting
Contribute to ongoing service development within the unit
The exact timetable will be tailored to comply with the Fellows specific interests. The successful applicant will play a full role in the day to day running of intensive care, including the management of individual patients within and outside the unit and a contribution to the management of bed capacity within the unit. In addition, the appointee will also respond to resuscitation and trauma calls to the emergency department, adult and paediatric cardiac arrest calls and support the outreach service. The Fellow will take part in the speciality trainee level on-call rota, being on call for the intensive care unit usually as the senior trainee. There is a full shift resident commitment with internal leave cover.
We are also open to the option of the Fellow working the required out of hours component as weekend daytime shifts instead of nights. This will be agreed upon only following a discussion and mutual agreement of the job plan.
The Fellowship can be adapted to support the Fellow in developing specific interests. We will provide 18 days study leave in total per annum and allow time to attend department teaching and to pursue their areas of interest upon agreement with their supervisor.
FUSIC - Opportunities and supervision for learning ultrasound skills will be provided by approved trainers
Simulation - Trainees will be encouraged to attend simulation skills training
Acquisition of new clinical skills and attendance at regional / national meetings is encouraged. Clinical simulation sessions are provided as an integral part of the local teaching programme.
The programme has been running for a year and has received excellent feedback from the current group of trainees.
