Job summary

Are you a motivated and enthusiastic physiotherapy assistant who is looking for a new challenge in the busy Orthopaedic Unit at Frimley Park Hospital?

You will be working under supervision of Physiotherapists in providing a high standard Physiotherapy service on the Orthopaedic wards, Day Surgery & Pre-operation Department.

Please note that we are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

These posts could be suitable for band 2 staff who are looking for a new challenge under a band 2-3 developmental post within 6 months after completion of competencies.

Main duties of the job

  • To be responsible & accountable for a clinical caseload on the Orthopaedic Unit.
  • To teach & supervise exercises & mobility
  • To assist the Physiotherapists with patient assessment & treatment
  • To carry out non-clinical duties such as frame cleaning, sending referrals etc

Job description

Job responsibilities

Within specific guidelines and following training to be solely responsible and accountable for a clinical case load working within codes of practice and professional guidelines. This includes patient documentation in both professional and medical notes and monthly statistical work sheets.

After a period of training to be solely responsible for the primary assessment of post-operative patients according to the guidelines on both the orthopaedic and day surgery unit. The list is not exhaustive but may include:

  • Total knee replacement
  • Total hip replacement
  • Fracture neck of femur
  • Arthroscopic Knee surgery
  • Foot surgery
  • Shoulder surgery

After a period of training the clinical role may include:

  • Provision of walking aids and instruct patients in their use,
  • Checking the condition of walking aids/other equipment,
  • Identifying the need for and fitting cricket pad splints and ROM braces.
  • Provision and progression of an appropriate treatment plan to include exercises and mobility aids
  • Fitting of orthotics once provided by a Physiotherapist/Appliance officer
  • Teaching and supervision of exercises,
  • Checking patients ability to manage stairs prior to discharge,
  • Applying cryotherapy
  • Set up continuous passive motion (CPM) machine and instruct patient in the use
  • To demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical risk and reporting untoward incidents.
  • To demonstrate a physical ability to carry out physiotherapy interventions and therapeutic handling without direct supervision. There is frequent requirement to exert moderate physical effort for several short periods during a day.
  • To be responsible for the safe use of equipment used in carrying out physiotherapy duties adhering to the departments medical devices policy. This includes competency and accuracy to use equipment by you and other healthcare professional, carers and patients.
