Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the small team of the Medical examiners office to assist in supporting the expansion of the service and impact on the care of bereaved families in the area. The successful post holder will support medical examiners in their role in scrutinising the circumstances and causes of death within the hospital and community. They willbe a point of contact and source of advice for bereaved next of kin, healthcare professionals, the coroner and registration services.

Main duties of the job

To support the Trust medical examiners in their role in scrutinising the circumstances and causes of death. To be a point of contact and source of advice for healthcare professionals in relation to the medical examiners service and also coroner and registration services. To be a point of contact and source of advice for relatives of deceased patients, healthcare professionals and coroner and registration services. To support in the integration and implementation of systems and processes relating to the Medical Examiner role and the national Learning from Death Strategy. To work alongside the Patient Safety Team to manage the Trust mortality systems across all services ensuring internal and external qualitative and quantitative key performance indicators are managed and achieved.

  • A Level qualification or equivalent
  • Qualifications/skills in day-to-day operational/process management of a customer facing service where users may have unpredictable and emotionally charged needs.
  • Education to GCSE level Maths and English

Desirable

  • National Quality Board Learning from deaths framework and the Structured Judgement Review methodology

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of developing and delivering training
  • Experience in managing databases (Excel)
  • Experience in dealing with difficult/sensitive conversations.
  • Experience of organising work around time pressured, changeable competing demands and fluctuating workloads

Desirable

  • Experience of clinical audit/promoting quality issues within healthcare
  • Experience of change management
  • To have an understanding of medical terminology that enables informed discussions about causes/circumstances of death with bereaved families, clinicians, coroner and registration service staff.
  • Experience of working in a healthcare or related setting with multidisciplinary teams and of working across organisational boundaries

  • Knowledge of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 and its relation to the Death Certification process.
  • Highly evolved empathetic and self-awareness skills to deal with bereaved families who may have barriers to understanding information due to their grief or disability.
