Job summary

The older person's medicine department includes the Acute Frailty Unit, Ward 7, Ward 8 and Ward 20. SHOs may be expected to work across all of these areas flexibly. The department looks after older people who are often living with frailty, dementia and comorbidity. We provide a holistic, multidisciplinary, patient centered approach to care, based on the principles of comprehensive geriatric assessment.

Main duties of the job

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The appointee is responsible to the Consultants for the execution of his/her professional duties and for the supervision of the junior staff in the departments.
  • He/she will be responsible for the routine and emergency admission of patients.
  • He/she will arrange to be on duty for emergencies in accordance with the appropriate rota.
  • He/she will carry out daily ward rounds to assess progress of patients and ensure that all treatments ordered are carried out and attend rounds with Consultants.
  • He/she is to ensure that adequate patient notes are kept and correspondence is undertaken punctually at all times.
  • He/she will make him/herself available to confer with patient's relatives, if required.
  • In carrying out his/her duties, the appointee will at all times be responsible for keeping the Consultants informed of serious cases on the Ward, cases of death and any other matter which it is deemed necessary that their attention should be drawn to. Any cases in which he/she has doubts must be referred to the Consultant.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MB, ChB or equivalent. Valid ALS Certificate
  • 1 year in SHO acute General Medicine with experience of acute on call
  • At least two years post-registration

Desirable

  • Part I MRCP Part II Written or PACES or equivalent

Previous experience

Essential

  • Experience of acute medical take and inpatient medicine
  • Suitable for SHO level ward work. Able to undertake ward rounds.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Expected attributes are intelligence, good organisation, ability to make balanced decisions and to cope with medical complexity. Good interpersonal skills are required to deal with patients and colleagues.
  • Good organisation essential. Ability to apply theories of medicine to clinical practice. To know when to seek help.
