Job summary

Applications are invited for the appointment of a dynamic and enthusiastic Locum Consultant in Paediatrics at Frimley Health Foundation NHS Trust (at the Wexham Park Hospital site).

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of 19 dedicated WTE Acute Paediatric Consultants.

Our three core values, and the behaviours that support them, guide everything we do and set out what we expect of our staff in the way they treat patients, visitors, service users and each other.

This post is to cover long term sick leave for a colleague.

There will be 2 general OP clinics per week, in addition to PAU or Ward cover or the Neonatal Unit as needed. Instead of PAU work you may need to conduct Child Protection Medicals as needed.

You will be working with a dynamic group of consultants who support each other, flexibility will be key, and makes this role suitable for an individual who is on the specialty register but may not have Consultant level experience. This job does not require any out of hours or weekend work.

Each week we have two consultants attending, one for Paediatrics, and one for Neonates.

Main duties of the job

Management structure

The paediatric department is part of the Frimley Health Women's and Children's Directorate.

The Paediatric Unit

Ward 24 paediatric unit has a total of 26 cots or beds, with the ability to accept infants, children, and teenagers, in addition there are 8 spaces in the Paediatric Assessment Unit. As well as direct admissions from ED, the ward also facilitates elective activity, and the PAU takes direct GP admissions. In addition to this we also take day cases, offer ambulatory care and open access for some patient groups. Separate areas on the ward are designated for children with medical conditions, children having surgery and those suffering from infectious diseases.

The Neonatal Unit

Local Neonatal Units (LNU) for babies born at 27 weeks gestation and above and care for babies with a range of care needs and conditions. We also workwith the neonatal transport teams to transfer babies to other hospitals who need care in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). NICUs will care for babies who are born extremely prematurely or require additional specialist care or surgery.

Paediatric Assessment Unit.

The Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) is adjacent to the in-patient ward and is staffed by nurses and doctors in training. The unit will see typically between 20 to 30 children referred from primary care or ED. With the increase in activity Consultants have PAU cover sessions in the job plan to support the work on PAU and maintain patient flow.
