Job summary
This is for a substantive Consultant post in Emergency Medicine at Frimley Park Hospital with the opportunity to work in Emergency Medicine at Wexham Park Hospital.
The Emergency Department at Frimley Park Hospital, which was rated as outstanding by CQC in 2014, delivers care to approximately 125,000 new patients a year. The Paediatric ED is open 24/7 and sees over 28,000 children a year. There are further proposed improvements to the ED having had a major improvement in 2012 with a new-build. The department has a large Resus with 8 cubicles, 21 Majors cubicles, a 9 cubicle Ambulatory Area and a separate Paediatric ED. There is a helipad on the roof of the 2012 build to convey our sickest patients to and from ED.
Applicants for the position should be on the Specialist Register for Emergency Medicine or within 6 months (from the interview date) of award of their CCT in Emergency Medicine. A subspecialty qualification would be welcome, but not mandatory. Instructor status in ALS/ATLS/APLS is preferable and in date provider status is essential.

Main duties of the job
The job plan will normally be based on a 10 PA contract which will divide into 8 DCC and 2 SPA. The appointee will be based at the Frimley Park site with opportunities for cross-site working at our other ED in Wexham Park Hospital. The appointee will be expected to join the annualised rota which allows greater flexibility to pursue other interests and help maintain a good work life balance. The DCC will be annualised at a quarterly rota meeting to provide ED shop floor cover from 0800-midnight 7 days a week. The weekend frequency is 1 in 6 weekends working either a day (08-17.30) or late (17.30-00.00 with on-call from home). There are aspirations with additional ED Consultant numbers towards expanding the evening and weekend shift pattern in accordance with the RCEM workforce document. EM Consultant duties include leadership, supervision, education, mentoring, leading resuscitation teams, and leading ED handover board-rounds.

Research
There is an active research programme within the ED, with involvement in national portfolio projects and regional studies.
Teaching
The appointee will be expected to contribute to the departmental teaching programme for consultant, middle tier and junior tier ED doctors. The ED hosts medical students from Southampton and St Georges and there is opportunity to be involved in their educational programme in ED. The PGEC co-ordinates simulation, life-support courses (off-site) and other educational opportunities for ED staff.
Other Duties
The appointee may wish to take on other roles in conjunction with their clinical role. Any positions offered from outside of the Trust must be discussed with the Chief of Service prior to the position being accepted, so that the impact of this can be fully considered and any job plan amendments undertaken if any additional role is to be accepted.
