Job summary
We are currently looking to recruit a dynamic and enthusiastic Senior Sister/ Senior Charge Nurse and Ward Manager for our Medical Acute Dependency Unit (MADU).Our 16 bedded unit is an exciting and dynamic unit that looks after patient's from a variety of different medical specialities, looking after both level 1 & 2 complex patients. Including: Non-invasive Ventilation, Tracheostomies, Optiflow, Arterial lines, CVC, Type 1 and Type 2 Respiratory Failure.
You must be able to demonstrate extensive post registration education and have excellent interpersonal skills with a vision to develop existing services to the next level.
You will need to have strong leadership skills to both initiate and support change and work collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary team not just within the Frimley Park Hospital but with the wider health and social care.
You will possess clinical expertise and be able to lead and advise on patient's plans and treatments of care accessing the resources around you to optimise safety. You will be expected to have the desire to influence and promote change.
You will have evidence of professional development and promote evidenced based practice within your role.
You will be supported by the Matron for your own professional development and growth alongside professional opportunities and courses, 1:1s and a peer support team who work closely within the building.
Main duties of the job
JOB SUMMARY:
- Responsible and accountable for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care without supervision.
- Act as a role model both in clinical expertise and clinical leadership
- To lead and monitor the performance and standards of care within the Nursing Team.
- Plan and deliver interventions and treatments when there are complex issues and / or serious illness. Ensure care is given in accordance with accepted standards and guidelines i.e., professional guidance from NMC or similar body,
- To take the lead on projects as appropriate
- Develop oneself and others in areas of practice. Keep up to date with professional issues, maintain a professional portfolio and actively participate in the performance review programme. Recognise own limitations and professional responsibility, and seek help, training and support where necessary.
- In conjunction with the Matron and other Charge Nurses, facilitate the development of the service and personal development of all nursing staff within the clinical area of responsibility
- To deputise for the Matron in their absence, attending appropriate meetings, maintaining an organised and structured workforce.

Professional Clinical Role

- On a shift-by-shift basis, take responsibility for a caseload of patients, where the post-holder is the named nurse. Co-ordinate and monitor the progress of patients along their critical pathway, reporting any variance from the pathway. Take named responsibility for co-ordinating individual patients discharge.

- Provide clinical leadership and development support to the nursing team.
- Where issues of clinical competence are identified, work with the Matron and practice development to overcome them.
- Participates in/initiates nursing research, audit and quality initiatives and implements change after consultation with and approved by unit Matron
- Pro-actively respond to potential complaints, to prevent formal complaints from occurring.
Practice Development
- To participate in the systematic monitoring and evaluation of nursing practice within the clinical area, ensuring that it is evidence-based. In conjunction with the ward team, participate in the development of action plans which aim to enhance the quality of practice using the results of audits undertaken. Participate in the evaluation of the changes made in practice.
- To assist the Matron in the implementation of the Trust Nursing & Midwifery strategy and Corporate Objectives within the clinical area and monitor its impact on practice.
- To make a specialist contribution to teaching of nurses and other health care professionals, demonstrating collaborative working and understanding of the practice development strategy.
Managerial Role
- To deputise for the Matron as required. This may involve taking on the leadership of specific projects, attending meetings, and enhancing the service offered to patients.
- To provide clinical and managerial leadership and guidance to the Nursing team of the MADU.
- To regularly co-ordinate the shift as the nurse in charge as per Trust Guidelines. Within that responsibility; plan, organise and deploy staff according to competencies and workload in order to meet patient needs.
- To take lead responsibility for a team of qualified nurses and Healthcare Assistants, supporting their personal and practice development. This includes regular IPDRs and performance management where appropriate. Take responsibility for recruiting and retaining team members in conjunction with the Matron.
- To assist the Ward Matron in:
- Induction of bank/agency and new staff to the clinical area.
- Ward audit and quality assurance programmes.
- Preparing of effective off-duty rotas
- Recruitment and retention of staff
- Budget control for the unit
- Clinical Governance.
- To ensure adequate supply of medical and surgical equipment, linen and any other type of equipment required in the absence of the Ward Manager.
- To liaise with Lead Nurse/Head of Professions/Care Group Manager, reporting any changes in the ward which may affect patient care and practice in the absence of the Matron.
Education Role
- Participate in the implementation of induction/development programmes for newly qualified/appointed staff in conjunction with the Matron and the rest of the team.
