Job summary
We are looking for enthusiastic and dedicated Locum Consultant Intensivist to join the team of Consultants in the Intensive Care Unit (Frimley Park) at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust. Intensive Care is part of the Directorate of Anaesthesia, Theatres and Critical Care. Frimley Park has been rated as outstanding by the CQC and we are in the process of expanding our capacity to 16 beds over the medium term.
The successful candidate will join the team of intensive care consultants to cover the Intensive Care Unit at Frimley Park. The Rota is currently 1:9 weekends and 1:9.5 nights but will become 1:10 non-resident nights (after 10pm) and weekends (after 6pm).
Main duties of the job
Consultants are heavily involved in managing and delivering patient care to ensure a high quality service, as well as teaching and training. Daily trainee cover is provided through a combination of anaesthetic trainees, ICU clinical fellows, supplemented by advanced critical care practitioners, medical core trainees, F3s and F2s. We have a monthly follow-up clinic supported by a nurse, physiotherapists and a clinical psychologist and we will reintroduce our bereavement clinic once a post-holder is in place.

The successful applicant will be expected to take part in delivering and developing critical care services within the Trust and to share the clinical, administrative and teaching work with the other consultants in the department. Participation in cross-site clinical audit and mortality & morbidity reviews is a requirement and an ongoing activity in both Departments. Clinical research projects are encouraged.
Our teaching cadre is strong and there are dedicated Thursday afternoon teaching sessions, combined with anaesthetics, primarily directed towards preparing candidates for the FRCA. However, we are increasingly asked to accommodate trainees from other specialities and F3 doctors and there is the opportunity to join the teaching team and help develop teaching to this cadre as well as the FRCA candidates.
We have a very strong ultrasound focus within the directorate and candidates with experience in FUSIC and FICE are welcome additions as the modality is taking a prominent role in critical care.
This is a full time, 10 PA, post which include 1 PA of SPA but any candidate who wishes to work less than full time will be considered and supported, provided that the critical care sessions are fully covered. Additional sessions may be available on request. The post will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of the new Consultant Contract (2003).
In addition to appraisal, the job plans of all consultants will be reviewed at least annually in conjunction with the Chief of Service and the Associate Director.
