Job summary

The role involves clinical photography of patients either in the studio or within wards and other clinical settings. It also includes production of graphic design and video services in support of the Trust's aims and objectives, including patient care, research, education and corporate communications.

At present the team comprises of a Manager and one Band 5 Medical Illustrator. The role requires a candidate who can work as an autonomous practitioner or to work as part of a team, which ever is appropriate for the circumstances.

Main base will be at Wexham Park Hospital Medical Illustration department, with regular travel to Frimley Park Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for the delivery of clinical photographic and video records which meet the highest possible standards

Manage own photographic workflow

Take photographs and video recordings in all areas of the Trust including wards, theatres, A&E, mortuary, etc

Photographs & video recordings of patients for treatment records, clinical audit, teaching, research, medico-legal, police evidence, publicity and promotional purposes

Photography of patients with medical conditions, non-accidental injuries, communicable diseases, debilitating disorders, major trauma, open wounds and sores, etc

Specialist dental photography and other specialist clinical photographic procedures

Photography of sudden infant death cases, deceased and dying for records and at the request of relatives

Produce general images for use in patient and corporate information including portraiture and Public Relations photographs

Photograph equipment and pack shots in a studio environment

Responsible for the security, confidentiality and copyright of patient photographic & video images and data

Contribute to the effective day to day running of the department, assist in the development of good working practices and help to support other members of the team

PURPOSE OF JOB:

To help provide a comprehensive high quality Medical Illustration service to the Trust including clinical photography, graphic design and video production.

KEY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Practice with in the terms of the Academy for Healthcare Sciences Standards Expected of a Registered Medical Illustrator and the Institute of Medical Illustrators Code of Professional Conduct for Professional Members and follow local policies and standard operating procedures
  • Manage clinical photographic studio & related work in various hospitals without supervision
  • Responsible for the delivery of clinical photographic and video records which meet the highest possible standards
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of administrative and technical quality assurance standards and protocols including routine standardized photographic techniques
  • Manage own photographic workflow including allocation of tasks, setting targets and priorities to ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of the photographic work
  • Analyse, judge and advise on client requests, general department workflows and specialist clinical photographic workflows, identifying and resolving complex equipment, imaging system and process problems.
  • Take photographs and video recordings in all areas of the Trust including wards, theatres, A&E, mortuary, etc
  • Produce photographs & video recordings of patients for treatment records, clinical audit, teaching, research, medico-legal, police evidence, publicity and promotional purposes
  • Undertake photography of patients with medical conditions, non-accidental injuries, communicable diseases, debilitating disorders, major trauma, open wounds and sores, etc
  • Undertake specialist dental photography and other specialist clinical photographic procedures using specialist photographic and clinical equipment

  • Discuss clinical photographic procedures with patients and ensure that all consent forms are completed

  • Provide a reprographics service producing images from X-Rays, books, slides, etc
  • Produce general images for use in patient and corporate information including portraiture and Public Relations photographs
  • Photograph equipment and pack shots in a studio environment
  • Consult and advise patients and customers on services to ensure requests are understood, undertaken and costed
  • Assist in the management and develop of the Trusts patient image management system and photographic library
  • Responsible for all photographic and associated equipment which falls under the post holders control. Ensure that the equipment is well maintained, secure and hygienic for clinical purposes
  • Responsible for the security, confidentiality and copyright of patient photographic & video images and data
  • Ensure clinical images and data are processed in compliance with the Trusts consent & confidentiality policies, Caldicott guidelines, the Data Protection Act Common Law duty of confidentiality, The Access to Health Records Act 1990, Children Act 1989 & 2004, The Copyright, Designs, and Patents Act 1988, The Data Protection Act 2018 inc GDPR, Mental Health Act 2007, Mental Capacity Act 2005, Obscene Publications Act 1964, Copyright & Patents Act 1988, Human Rights Act 1998, Freedom of Information Act 1998 in relation to photographic recordings, video recordings and media.
  • Identify areas where service should be improved or developed; plan, recommend and implement change where required in conjunction with the Head of Photography and the Head of Medical Illustration
  • Represent the Trust on issues relating to clinical photography and general photography
  • Provide advice and problem solve technical and professional matters within the section and to service users
  • Contribute to the effective day to day running of the department, assist in the development of good working practices and help to support other members of the team

Staff

  • Supervise and mentor trainee and work experience students
  • Day to day supervision of all staff that impact on the photographic studio including chaperones and clinicians
  • Provide training where necessary to all appropriate Trust staff with regards to photography

Policy and Service Development

  • Work within the AHCSs Standards, IMIs Code of Professional Conduct and follow local policies and standard operating procedures
  • Implement the Trusts policy and procedure relating to the photographic and video recording of patients confidentiality, consent, copyright and storage
  • Contribute to the business planning of the service, regarding service & technical developments
  • Provide recommendations for service improvement to the Head of Photography
  • Communicate with clinicians and service managers to discuss service changes, improvements and provide recommendations to the Head of Photography
  • Contribute to the development of regional and national professional protocols
  • Maintain an up-to-date CPD portfolio to satisfy the requirements of the AHCS standards and IMIs Code of Professional Conduct. This is a mandatory requirement of the post
