Job summary
Applicants are invited to apply for a range of clinical fellow posts which are 75% clinical and 25% non-clinical. We are looking for doctors to start August 2022.
This is an excellent opportunity for doctors to maintain clinical work but also have time in their schedules dedicated to areas of interest to them. We see this as a way of sustainable working whilst also building on CVs and experience.
Clinical fellow posts are available in: Simulation, Education, Trauma, Ultrasound, Research & Quality Improvement, Wellbeing and Mental Health & Frequent Attenders. Main duties of the job
Clinical work will be carried out in the Emergency Department (ED) at Frimley Park Hospital. Both the hospital and the ED have excellent reputations and are CQC rated Outstanding. We work hard to do the best for our patients and we look after our staff. We are a supportive team with very approachable seniors. Our team of 17 ED consultants provide 8am-midnight presence in the department seven days a week and are on-call from home midnight til 8am. Teamwork and valuing all members of the multidisciplinary team is core to our values. Training is very important to us and you will be allocated a supervisor who will support you to achieve your development goals. You will join the departmental teaching programme which is 2 hours weekly for ST1/2 equivalents and is one day per month for ST3+ equivalents. You will also be encouraged to take your allocated study leave.

SIMULATION
At Frimley Park Hospital, we have a high-tech sim lab in the postgrad centre. We have high-fidelity adult, child, baby and obstetric manikins, a control room behind one-way class and a separate classroom next-door where the scenario can be watched via multiple video cameras. An enthusiastic and experienced team of simulation technicians will be working with you. This year weve started Lightning Sim sessions which are brief in-situ simulations that occur in the emergency department. You will take over this role from the August 2021 ED simulation fellow.
Expected roles:
- To attend the Trust simulation faculty training
- To organise and run simulation teaching for the emergency department staff and medical students
- To run simulation both in the sim suite and in-situ
- To be faculty on the KSS regional simulation training days held at Frimley
- To write simulation scenarios
- To learn the technical skills involved in running simulation
- To work with the trust simulation fellows to support each others training days and to share ideas and learning
- To promote multi-disciplinary learning
- To work with your supervisor to ensure that the work is beneficial to the department and to support you in meeting your learning goals
- To supervise medical students whilst on placement in the ED
- To work with the other ED fellows to expand your experience and support each others projects

EDUCATION
Education and training is very important to our department. In addition to our SHO and middle grade timetabled teaching, there are many other opportunities for you to get involved with. Past educational fellows have organised a wealth of training for all of the ED MDT including FIB training, minors teaching and Resuscitate Frimley- a one-day conference at our Trust - to name a few. Medical students from Southampton and St.Georges have placements with us and you will be involved in their supervision and teaching.
Expected roles:
- To organise and deliver MDT teaching for the ED
- To provide medical student teaching
- To support medical students on ED placement and help with their induction
- To organise the medical student supervision rota for the times they are present in the department. (Supervision is carried out by the education and simulation fellows plus any other fellows with an interest in teaching)
- To partake in simulation training
- To organise either the SHO or the middle grade teaching programme, supported by the consultant lead for medical education
- To collect and analyse the feedback from the teaching programmes
- To provide feedback on peers teaching (and complete teaching observation assessments depending on grade)
- To be able to deliver virtual teaching
- To support regional training days hosted by Frimley ED
- To work with the other ED fellows to expand your experience and support each others projects

TRAUMA
We are a busy Trauma Unit and work closely with the Major Trauma Centre at St.Georges Hospital in London. We have particular interests in silver trauma and trauma team leadership. This new post has been running for one year and you will work with the consultant lead for trauma to develop this post according to your skills and interests.
Roles:
- To workwith the ED Trauma Lead & Nurse Lead onquality improvement and work to develop new strategies, policy, and management guidelines related to major trauma
- To co-chair bi-monthly Trauma Mortality & Morbidity meetings and work with the ED Trauma Team to implement changeand improvementsidentified
- To Work with the ED Trauma Team to review and develop current major traumadocumentation
- To work with the TARN data team to understand, develop and use TARN data
- To aid in disseminating important learning outcomes to ED and external speciality teams
- To attend the Trust Trauma Network Faculty Group meetings and liaise with other speciality leads
- To participate in ATLS courses (if appropriate to level of training)
- To develop MDT trauma training for the emergency department
- To work with the other ED fellows to expand your experience and support each others projects

ULTRASOUND
Many of our consultants and registrars are trained in ultrasound and it is used in our daily practice at Frimley. We have 2 Sonosites, 1 GE and 2 Butterfly IQs with accompanying iphone 12s. Your supervisor will be the ED consultant lead for ultrasound. Our previous ultrasound fellows have created many training opportunities for all our staff, including vascular access training for all band 4s and above.
Expected roles:
- To attend a course in Level 1 emergency ultrasound (if the applicant does not have this already). This includes FAST, AAA, echo in life support and vascular access
- Self-directed time to become level 1 accredited (Your supervisor will support your accelerated accreditation of level 1)
- Following accreditation, to be available to undertake POCUS scans of ED patients to help inform clinical decision making for non-accredited colleagues
- To lead on one or more point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) related quality improvement projects
- To organise ultrasound teaching for ED staff
- To deliver level 1 training locally to ED staff, once qualified to do so
- To work with the other ED fellows to expand your experience and support each others projects
Optional roles:

As a specialty, Emergency Medicine was one of the first to establish quality improvement (QI) as a tool to improve patient outcomes. Both research studies and quality improvement projects (QIPs) have been running in our department for many years now. Previously, we have had QI fellows in the department and now we are looking to expand this role to include research as well.
