Job summary

We have an opportunity for a Senior Costing Accountant to join our Income and Costing team

You will be supporting the Head of Costing and SLR working with informatics and business support departments to maintain and develop the Trusts Patient Level Information and Costing (PLICS) models in order to produce accurate and timely costing and analytical information to support the Trusts costing returns (National Cost Collection) and the development of Service Line Reporting (SLR).

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for devising, developing, managing and effectively implementing highly complex costing information systems and solutions, using knowledge of costing principles and techniques.
  • Plan, schedule and complete costing projects (including annual national returns and Service Line Reporting) with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Progress the development of the Costing System within the Trust to meet the external costing requirements detailed in the NHS Costing Manual.
  • Keep up to date with any new legislation or requirements issued by the Department of Health.
  • Produce detailed audit trails and reconciliation's for the costed financial and activity values at various control levels in line with costing guidance and Audit requirements.
  • Critically review significant changes in service costs and activity within the Trust between comparative years.
  • Produce benchmarking data, comparing the Trusts costs and activities against those published by other organisations.

Experience/Knowledge

  • Expert knowledge of finance issues in healthcare e.g.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of National Tariff and NHS costing and income flows
  • Possess expert specialist knowledge of financial and accounting procedures, financial and other aspects of legislation and NHS finance policies.
  • Strong IT skills in Excel, Access and other software packages, incorporating the input of financial data, creation and manipulation of spreadsheets
  • Experience of using General Ledger and Financial reporting software packages
  • Relevant finance experience.
  • At least three years working in NHS finance function.
  • Proven track record in the costing area of finance with experience at a senior level

Desirable

  • Advanced Knowledge of Access and other analytical tools and be able to manipulate data to produce useful reports.
  • 3 years post qualification experience
  • Use of specialist financial software
  • Previous NHS Finance experience including costing and income.
  • Experience in using Costmaster or equivalent costing system.
  • Five years plus NHS experience of varying aspects of the finance function
