Job summary

An exciting opportunity to move into an education focused role. We are expanding our Practice Educator resource to enhance the quality of the learning environments in our practice areas. We are looking for three keen and motivated nurses or allied health professionals to join the team to make a difference to our learners.

Main duties of the job

Working as part of the Clinical Education and Development Team, the Practice Educator role works to positively support, influence and improve the quality of the learning environment.

The post-holder will need to work with minimal supervision in contributing to the support of all types of learners (Nursing, Nursing Associate, Allied Health Professionals including Apprentices) in clinical practice. Support will include encouraging creativity in developing learning opportunities, promoting inter-professional working and learning and supporting assessment of learners.

To support assessment and supervision in practice, the post holder will be expected to spend approximately 80% of their time in clinical practice.

Working alongside the wider Clinical Education and Development Team they will develop and deliver quality education programmes that reflect NMC and HCPC standards, whilst incorporating national guidance and supporting the Trust's clinical governance agenda.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Demonstrate effective communication skills with professionals, learners and HEI partners.

Work effectively as a team member. Communicating clearly with the wider team. Escalating all concerns with their line manager or delegated other as appropriate.

Provide effective written and verbal feedback on performance using tact and compassion, which maintain patient safety as the primary driver, whilst recognising the different b)stages of development.

Develop and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues in secondary care, Local Higher education institutes and Clinical Commissioning Groups.

Assist and lead workshops, contributing to a positive culture by sensitively supporting the delivery of the transition from registrant to supervisor/assessor/, providing annual updates and both updating and monitoring the database

Liaise with the other Practice Educators to ensure a appropriate and fair allocation of placement teams and learners in practice are assigned to each team member. Decisions on allocation should be based on multiple factors including considerations such as learner type (e.g. direct entry, apprentice, intended profession), placement type (community, specialist, UCR, inpatients), distance from base, placement capacity and number of student allocations.

Review the allocation of placements and learners during team meetings to ensure fairness is maintained and rotate allocations to develop experiences and increase variety.

Participate in the recruitment and management of Clinical Apprentices (e.g. nursing associate / nursing / physiotherapy / podiatry / occupational therapy), throughout training until graduation

Have knowledge of learning needs and support clinically in practice, working alongside an appropriate proportion of pre-registration students at SCFT, enabling them to translate theory into practice and preparing them for their clinical assessments.

Promote all clinical placements as an environment that encourages learning. identify training needs, plan, implement and evaluate educational activities for students, providing constructive feedback on their progress

Serve as a role-model; an agent of change and a facilitator of work-based learning.

Ensure the preceptorship lead of those apprentices and students who gain employment at SCFT on registration, enabling their transition into registered practice.

Report all student absences and sicknesses, to ensure accurate monitoring of student placement activity for invoicing with the appropriate external stakeholders.

Address all student conduct issues and progress / escalate concerns where appropriate, to ensure respective HEI supports both the placement and the student.

Support practice to complete educational audits as required in the reporting cycle. Work collegiately to ensure standards are established, implemented and sustained, particularly those related to staff knowledge, skills development and patient safety.

Deliver training sessions in line with the scope of the role; this may include workshops addressing practice issues, practice assessor/ supervisor training and updates.

Provide accurate information as requested by the Clinical Development Lead to support quality assurance processes.

Act as a positive role model and leader at all times.

Use creativity, innovation and initiative to meet the changing and emerging needs of the healthcare workforce.

To act as a point of contact for placement allocation and spoke opportunities for all students, ensuring their educational outcomes are met whilst ensuring equity of capacity across the trust.

To support the implementation of any changes as a result of governmental and regulatory body recommendations.

Advise and support practice staff who have failing or challenging learners or practice situations. Escalating serious concerns to the Clinical Development Lead and referring to HEI liaison teams as needed.

Complete all documents, proformas and templates as required.

To use judgement skills to analyse complex situations and formulate solutions from a number of options.

To undertake 80% of working hours in clinical practice on a monthly basis,

Assist in the promotion of a culture of research and quality improvement.

Develop self in line with identified development needs, which anticipates and responds to the needs of the wider healthcare environment

Attends student induction days, providing an overview and insight to working within a community trust.

Support placements across the wide scope of the trust, including in areas and teams which may not be familiar settings to clinical experience / registration held.

Ensure advice is sought from relevant professional representatives when there are questions beyond experience or registration scope.
