Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our well-established friendly team of AHP Professional Leads. We are looking for an experienced, dynamic and compassionate speech and language therapist to provide professional leadership and direction to our adult speech and language therapy teams. We work across the beautiful county of Sussex, and the post holder will have flexibility to choose their base.

As a team of Professional Leads we offer support and guidance to our operational colleagues and clinical staff, supporting evidence based practice underpinned by therapy outcome measures and rooted in robust clinical governance. The Prof Lead will support the further development of clinical placements for undergraduates and the development of our support staff and registered clinicians to fulfil their potential and enable staff retention and growth. The role offers the opportunity to develop leadership and coaching skills while maintaining and supporting the development and quality improvement of clinical services.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide professional leadership by leading and advising on all aspects of professional practice, developing and sustaining best practice standards and the production and monitoring of competencies for Adult Speech and Language Therapy staff.
  • Act in an expert clinical advisory capacity on issues pertaining to quality and safety in Adult Speech and Language Therapy clinical practice across the organisation.
  • Support Operational Lead as required with Commissioning discussions regarding service specifications and specific clinical issues relating to Adult Speech and Language Therapy
  • Support and advise operational managers on Therapy workforce development, recruitment and retention, demand and capacity and waiting list management etc; as required.
  • Be involved with monthly data analysis of services if requested to predict changes in capacity and advise operational managers on staffing levels required to maintain safe clinical care.
  • Liaise with Professional Leads in other AHP professions and nursing, as necessary.
  • They will ensure the Trust works to grow student placements supporting clinical teams to deliver excellent clinical placements in line with the Fair share model and RCSLT guidelines. They will liaise with and link with local HEI providers and monitor the placement database, ensuring all student activity is correctly recorded and all due NMET tariff is collected.

1.Communication and working relationships

a) The post-holder will need to develop close working relationships with other members of the Professional Leadership team, the operational leadership team for adult SLT services, locality based CSMs and clinical staff.

b) The post-holder will communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues at all times in a manner consistent with the knowledge and skills level of a senior practitioner.

c) The post-holder will be expected to provide expert professional practice advice to services in accordance with national healthcare guidance, including that of professional bodies, NICE and Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

d) The post-holder will work closely with, and actively support both the Associate Director for AHPs and Chief Nurse in providing high quality professional Adult Speech and Language Therapy advice to all levels of the organisation.

e) The post-holder will be expected to undertake work at local, national and strategic level to progress professional practice issues within Adults Speech and Language Therapy

f) The post-holder will lead on engaging relevant stakeholders in their area across organisational boundaries to resolve difficulties and support best practice delivery for therapy staff.

g) The post-holder will be competent and confident in the use a wide range of resources and media to acquire, assimilate and generate complex information and convey in an appropriate manner within and external to the organisation. This may include presentations to large groups of clinical staff, senior management meetings and profession specific meetings at local and national level.

2. Key responsibilities

a) The post-holder will provide expert advice to clinical/service leads and operational managers on the development and critical evaluation of patient group directives, clinical guidelines, frameworks and competency tools to support clinicians in the delivery of optimal care.

b) The post-holder will undertake work at local, national and strategic level to progress professional practice issues within Adult Speech and Language Therapy

c) The post-holder will represent the organisation regarding Adult Speech and Language Professional Practice at ICB and National Level.

d) Delivery of safe clinical care

  • The post-holder will advise on compliance with NICE clinical guidelines and quality standards for Adult SLT services across the trust, provide evidence in relation to these as required and advise operational services on any actions required
  • The post-holder will work with other Professional Leads to support the design, and ensure delivery of, competency training programmes to develop both registered and unregistered staff in their area to provide safe and high-quality care.
  • They will advise on and support workforce transformation and skill mix programmes for adult SLT services, using tools (eg Calderdale Framework) to support this as appropriate.
  • The post-holder will be expected to lead on analysing and responding to Adult SLT professional practice risk issues as they arise within the Trust and produce reports with recommended actions to Associate Director for AHPs, Chief Nurse and General Managers as appropriate.
